Despite the Samsung Galaxy Note7 never officially launching locally, Samsung South Africa has announced that the handset is banned from all flights.
As a result of this ban, Samsung South Africa is setting up exchange kiosks at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, Cape Town International Airport and King Shaka International Airport in Durban.
Samsung has said that these kiosks will have promoters on stand-by to facilitate the exchange of the discontinued Galaxy Note 7 for a Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 edge. Samsung has said that users can also exchange the phone for a full refund.
“We making a friendly request to all travelers who might be in possession of a Galaxy Note7 to participate in the exchange program and to visit the Samsung exchange kiosks at the various airports prior to booking in for their flight,” director of Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa, Craig Fleischer said in a statement. “Customers who own or have a Galaxy Note7 in their possession will not be able to board a plane if they have the device on them in person, in carry-on baggage or in checked baggage.”
In order for Samsung to exchange the handset they do require some information. This includes your name, nationality, phone number, email address, address (it is unclear whether this is a postal or physical address at time of writing), place of departure, place of arrival as well as the IMEI and serial numbers of the Note 7 you wish to exchange.
The release of the Note 7 globally was marred by reports that the handset would spontaneously combust. Despite a rather quick recall it was later discovered that replacement Note 7 handsets were also prone to catching fire. As a result Samsung discontinued the smartphone earlier this month.
