I received this curriculum free of charge for the purpose of review. I was compensated for my time. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions expressed are my own.

No one can deny the research on the benefits of listening to classical music from an early age. It aids in concentration and brain development in children.  I first started listening to and enjoying classical music when I was in middle school, but I really never learned much of the history behind the music. I want to not only give my daughters an appreciation for classical music, but a deeper understanding of the historical and social significance of the music and the stories of the composers. Music Appreciation for the Elementary Grades from Zeezok Publishing is a series that makes that possible on all accounts!

Music Appreciation for the Elementary Grades

This is a complete curriculum designed for grades K-6. This package includes seven composer biographies, a lapbooking CD-rom, a set of 5 music CDs, and a comprehensive Student Activity Book.

The seven composer biographies are:

Joseph Haydn, the Merry Little Peasant

Franz Schubert and His Merry Friends

Handel at the Court of Kings

Paganini, Master of Strings

Mozart the Wonder Boy

Sebastian Bach, the Boy from Thuringia

Ludwig Beethoven and the Chiming Tower Bells

All components of the package dovetail beautifully together, creating a thorough and enjoyable music appreciation experience.

Why We Love Music Appreciation for the Elementary Grades

Living books: We tailor our homeschool studies around living books in every subject, every way we can. The biographies included are engaging stories about the composers, telling about their early lives, their inspirations, and the significance of their music. If you’re a Charlotte Mason homeschooler or you just love good books, this is a perfect way to study composers and music appreciation. They make excellent read-alouds.

It’s multi-sensory: The Student Activity Book includes hands-on activities for each lesson. Each lesson contains reading, listening, copywork, and drawing/writing/creative activities. There are even some science experiments related to the lessons! This truly engages all the senses in learning.

It’s cross-curricular: Not only is this a thorough way to study music appreciation, it also includes history, geography, science, and social studies/cultures. I was surprised by the amount of enrichment activities that are tied into music appreciation.

It’s multi-age appropriate: Even though it’s geared for the elementary years, it can be flexible for middle school as well. My oldest daughter is at the 8th grade level and she sat in on some of the activities with her younger sisters (6 & 8). I learned from it, too!

Lapbooking: I love that lapbooking is included! My girls always enjoy lapbooks so this works perfectly for us.

Flexible schedule:  The Student Activity Book lists a suggested weekly lesson outline to keep you on track. However, that schedule is easily adjustable because you can pick and choose which readings and activities to do for the day.

Easy to plan:  The lesson outline makes it easy to plan ahead so your can print any necessary lapbooking components and follow along each day.

A wealth of material:  This program is designed to be used over a period of two years. There is so much information here! It makes an excellent value for the price.

Music CDs:  We enjoy listening to these as part of the activities, but also at different times throughout the day. I’ve found that some of the music has a calming effect for my kids at bedtime. When we listen to livelier classical music, it can inspire them to move and get out some of their pent-up energy. It makes an ideal “brain break” in our homeschool days. I find that it even inspires their pretend play because some music sounds more like “princess” music or “adventure” music, as my girls say.

Where there is devotional music, God is always at hand with His gracious presence. — Bach
