== XHTML Validation being pushed by non-staff ==

If I recall correctly, Defender1031 isn't staff, and shouldn't be editing other people's signatures to conform to the validation of the Wiki's XHTML DTD, (nor was Homestar-Winner, etc. back before I knew about it as they weren't staff either.) However, what does the staff feel about this issue, as I just wanted to ask the question, "Should non-staff go about changing '''''other user''''' signatures?" I'm not trying to be rude or anything, rather, getting the question off my chest, seeing as Staff are the only ones really allowed to edit others' signatures, even though that reverting would go against the HRWiki rules, but a non-staff member editing another user's page (of any kind) is also against said rules, thus creating a rule paradox, if you will. {{User:ColdReactive/sig}} 04:55, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

:There's no rule that says that non-admins can't fix the code in other people's signatures. There [[HRWiki:User space#Ownership and editing of pages in the user space|IS a rule]] that says "If you must [edit someone else's user space], it should be for a compelling reason, for example to correct linking errors that might confuse readers or to provide technical assistance." Validation, especially when a signature is actively breaking pages, falls under the latter category. Note also that the [[HRWiki:Validation committee|Validation Committee]] was created mostly as a response to people using incorrect code in their sigs. (The most telling is the section on font tags: "There are many <nowiki><font color="red">text</font></nowiki> tags hanging out here and there. '''Many people are using them in their sigs.''' Since font tags are allowed in XHTML 1.0 Transitional, it's okay if people want to continue using them, but they should make sure to enclose the color declaration in quotation marks to keep things valid. However, '''we should try to switch everyone''' to <nowiki><span style="color:#rgb;">text</span></nowiki>. This method is much more forward compatible.") Also, if you are somehow under the impression that I have no communication with the admins beyond that which is visible to you on the wiki, you are mistaken. I hope that answers your question. {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 06:24, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

== Does a Base64 Image count as an image? ==

Base64 text can be converted from an image to text and back into an image [http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1124149/embedding-background-image-data-into-css-as-base64-good-or-bad-practice via CSS]. Is it still valid to count such images as personal images even though they are text data? As the base64 text does not require as much data to be sent and received as an image does. (Browser processes the information from the text data, rather than download the image data.) {{User:ColdReactive/sig}} 04:16, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

:Actually, text-based base 64 encoding is MORE data per the same image than actual image data. Each byte of base-64 data holds 1/4 of the possible values that a byte of image data can hold (accounting for 6 bits as opposed to 8), hence for every 4 bytes of image data, there are 5 characters of base-64 data, meaning, more work all around. {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 09:31, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

::I meant sent and received in terms of '''network''' bandwidth, not processing. {{User:ColdReactive/sig}} 10:06, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

:::Yes I know exactly what you meant, and you are still wrong. For every 4 bytes of image data transferred over the network, base-64 transfers 5 bytes. {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 10:38, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

== Creating Accounts is No Longer an Option? ==

I've [[HRWiki talk:Featured Article Selection#Take-a-break.exe|retired the featured articles]] and have set up the beginnings of an automatic list of daily featured H*R content. The format of this list will change, perhaps drastically, as we experiment with redesigning the entire main page. : I think if they updated they would prepare a really extravagant comeback that will make [[Weclome Back]] look like... Something funny... That isn't as extravagant. They couldn't just pop in and pretend there was no hiatus, it would have to be a big thing—like a holiday special or something, or a really well-thought-out sbemail written in that could coincidentally explain everything. You should make an account. It has benefits... But... I can't think of any of them now. Um... You can patrol edits? Anyway, if you did I could welcome you. I'm on the welcoming committee but no one ever joins these days so I haven't gotten to welcome anyone. {{User:Broncotroll/sig}} 21:05, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

:Did you ever stop to think that maybe the reason no one joins anymore is because THEY CAN'T!!! For some reason, the 'create account' link no longer exists. I would LOVE to create an account, and I love H*R, but it is impossible... Once the "create account" link is restored, if I don't have to send or receave any emails to do so (my parents are VERY strict about the emails I send, you know always standing over my shoulder and stuff), I will/would gladly make an account faster than you can/could say "Famous Ladies always like SBEmail". But, until then, I/you/we will just have to settle for [[Special:Contributions/65.33.237.1|65.33.237.1]] 14:35, 10 April 2013 (UTC) (When and if I do get to make an account, my username will be Jdaniels15, though my handle will be ToaJuaraevo01)

::The reason the method of creating accounts was changed was because up until the words were removed from next to "log in", we were having a lot of trouble with spambots creating accounts. We prefer that all of our accounts belong to people <small>(with slight exceptions for the five bots that are run by admins)</small>. So they changed the method to ensure that a person was creating the account. Given that no spambots have created an account since then, the new method appears to be doing its job. And granted, it looks like there have been four total edits that were made by users who joined the wiki this way, and three of those four were to the sandbox. So yes, that is an unfortunate setback. However, just like anything else, there is no perfect way to handle the situation. In general, I prefer the old method of creating accounts, but I also like it when there aren't any spambots creating accounts every couple of hours. {{User:The Knights Who Say Ni/sig}} 03:14, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

:::Ok, I can understand that, Spambots are nothing to BLARG at (Not that I would know). I still like wikipedia's way of doing it, (and they don't seem to have any trouble with spambots, but why? The World May Never Know.) [[Special:Contributions/65.33.237.1|65.33.237.1]] 11:30, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

::::As far as i know, wikipedia's way of dealing with spambots is having a huge active user base who monitors editing activity and quickly revert them. It'd be nice if this wiki had a huge user base, but unfortunately, it was never that big to begin with and most of the great users left as the hiatus lengthened. {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 12:19, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

:So wait. Are you saying that there are no more great users on the wiki? . . . and that Broncotroll and TKWSN aren't great? They seem worthy of adminship to me . . If they aren't admins already. On a completely unrelated note, I think that I have been spending WAY too much time on the wiki: I am in college, and for one of my online discussion posts, one of my classmates pointed out that I was starting to sound like Strong Bad. And on a RELATED note: I do not like the visual word varification picture things. Sometimes you can hardly recognize the letters, and when you can they are often the letters that have identical capital and lower-case forms (I.E.: V, C, X, S, O, W, Z). It usually takes me 5-6 tries just to get one right. Desparately in need of a break, [[Special:Contributions/65.33.237.1|65.33.237.1]] 13:33, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

::Woah, I didn't know that. That's not fair... especially because those imagecaptcha things are like impossible to read. Maybe if you contact an admin, (I recommend [[It's dot com]] as he is the main developer/the only active admin these days) and give them your username they could bypass the spambot security and set up your account. Big thanks for the compliment! I'm a very active but a relatively new user (most sysops joined around 2005 but I joined in 2011), I don't think I could handle being a sysop at this point but I've been learning the features pretty quickly. I was on long enough though to confirm that most of the ''eminent'' users have left, there are still some great users though. Defender actually taught me a lot about the wiki (albiet sarcastically) himself. There aren't very many active ''sysops'' though, we need more people with sysop privileges to combat spammers (but thankfully, since the hiatus, there aren't many of those as well). {{User:Broncotroll/sig}} 14:16, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

:::Anonny, look up the definition of "most". I did not say that those who are still present aren't great users, I said that most of those who were great users have left. Also, you're in college but your parents still monitor every email you send? That seems rather odd.

Here's an idea. For the cartoons that star the entire cast, I think that we should have a filmography category for all of them at once, instead of having one category for each. "ONE for ALL" and not "ALL for ONE". {{User:ToaJuaraevo01/sig1}} 12:49, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

:This seems less than ideal for searching, as that episode would then not show up on the character's individual filmography list. == Image requests ==

When it comes to notice templates, the images have lost a little consistency. Our more recent templates use direct screenshots. Because the images aren't edited, some of the templates seem slightly unprofessional or the image appears misplaced.

These templates would look a little cleaner, in my opinion, if the images used were like the ones before them: edited and/or decompiled, with a healthy dose of alpha channel. I've not the resources on my end for such a task, so I'd like to list the images that could be replaced, not necessarily updated/reuploaded, in case someone shares my concerns or is otherwise interested. All of these might need a decompiler:

== W00tstock 2013 / San Diego Comic Con ==

So I don't know how the whole update thingy works as I've been away from this site for a few years now.

But just a question.

[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0m-k6qZMx8 Does this whole W00tstock/San Diego Comic Con sequence featuring Strong Bad and Homestar Runner count as an update of some kind?] Heck, does it constitute its own page on this wiki? These are all questions with answers that are probably obvious but I'm a wee bit out of touch at the moment so you'll have to forgive me. It's just that after so long with us getting nothing regarding Homestar, not even a sniff, something as big as a public appearance at Comic Con would be a huuuuuuuuuuuuge deal.

Nevertheless, I just thought I should bring this to the attention of anyone who's more experienced than I am because frankly I've forgotten about how exactly this site works, unfortunately. But yeah! In terms of H*R news, it seems to be proof that the series isn't completely dead at least, and... yeah. I think I made myself clear enough here, haha.

Thanks,

== New accounts? ==

According to the log in page, you can register by sending an email to the admin. I sent one around the end of last month, and I haven't gotten a reply or anything. Was there a hiccup in the system, or is the information outdated? --[[Special:Contributions/63.246.240.133|63.246.240.133]] 21:38, 24 August 2013 (UTC)

:If you were the one that included an username (like the instructions say), check your inbox for an email. If you weren't, send another email with a username. -- [[User:Tom|Tom]] 02:34, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

He has no contributions and the only people who have tried to edit his page are anonymous users. There's also a system message that indicates that the user account doesn't exist. Should it be deleted? {{User:MichaelXX2/sig}} 16:02, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

:Don't worry about that. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 23:22, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
