Indian Classical Dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai Passes Away : Mrinalini Sarabhai (97) passed away in Ahmedabad on Thursday. She was the wife of renowned scientist.She was admitted to a city-based hospital on Wednesday, but was brought to her home early on Thursday morning where she breathed her last.She was an expert dancer in Bharatanatyam and Kathakali, and was also a choreographer and a dance instructor.The danseuse was awarded by the Indian government with Padma Bhushan in 1992.She was a very multi-faceted personality not only she was just a dancer, she had a lot of interest in handicraft and handlooms and was associated with Gurjari.

Padma Bhushan Mrinalini Sarabhai was one of the best known faces of Indian classical dance.She was a Malayali and belonged to a very good family. She was an expert dancer in Bharatanatyam and Kathakali, and was also a choreographer and a dance instructor.She would wear beautiful saris, jewellery, kajal a nose stud and had a very striking persona. A dynamic personality she believed that new dance forms do evolve over time, but it is also important that they develop from a traditional classical foundation.She was a very multi-faceted personality and my condolences to the family.
Legendary Indian Classical Dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai Dies At 97
Mrinalini Sarabhai was one of the leading lights of the Indian dance scene for a long time and lived till her ripe old age. I remember her as someone who was always dressed very beautifully. A pioneer in the field of Indian classical dance, she was the first classical dancer who turned to choreography. Born to a social worker and political activist, she received her early education from Santiniketan where she realized her true calling.
”My mother Mirnalini Sarabhai has just left for her eternal dance,” her daughter and noted dancer Mallika Sarabhai said in a Facebook post announcing her death. Mrinali is well-known for her experiment as the founder director of Darpana Academy of Performing Arts.She established Bharatanaytam and Kathakali and classical dance in Ahmedabad and of course she travelled with her group abroad and got recognized internationally. We all pray may her soal rest in peace.
