HOW CONNECTION

with Stefan Mumaw

Start your HOW Design Live experience off right… by meeting up with old friends, finding some new ones, and having some geeky designer fun. Creative Boot Camp author Stefan Mumaw will be hosting HOW Connection, a high-five & mingle event that’s designed to help you shake off the rust and take off the masks. If you’re looking to turbo-boost your conference start or find your new conference bud, Stefan has a few killer connection starters to get you interacting and chatting (think human Scrabble but with a social kick), finding out about your fellow HDLers, and just getting to know each other like the friendly, quirky, awesome designer humans that you are. So come to HOW Connection and start HOW Design Live off like you mean it.

HOW TO SPEND $400,000 OF YOUR $530,000 BILLINGS

with Armin Vit

Why are designers so afraid to talk about money? Let’s talk about money so that we can collectively figure out if we are valuing our work properly. In this session, Armin Vit will look at how we make every penny and how we spend it. Though Armin’s UnderConsideration isn’t your typical design firm, he’s at least willing to talk about money…and he’ll also be strong-arming some people he knows to give us a clue to their billings. Maybe. Starting with revealing his salaries over 8 years as an employee to UnderConsideration’s unconventional system today, you’ll get a glimpse at what it takes to survive as a small firm.

POWER OF VISUALS: INFOGRAPHICS AND STORYTELLING

with John T. Meyer of Lemonly

We all know a picture is worth a thousand words, so what is an infographic worth? John T. Meyer, founder of Lemonly, a visual marketing firm, looks at the power of visuals and the role of infographics and storytelling in your everyday communication. John will showcase amazing examples of the communication power of visuals and make the case for why infographics and visual storytelling aren’t going anywhere.

DESIGN IN THE AGE OF THE INVISIBLE INTERFACE

with David Womack

We’re moving from scenarios where we navigate interfaces to seek out information, to one where information seeks us out based on our personal data and context. When designing for this new landscape, we really need to think user, context, and available data first, rather than device or format first. And the resulting documents look more like choreography than they do like traditional design artifacts.

NIMBLE: THINKING CREATIVELY AND STRATEGICALLY IN THE DIGITAL AGE

with Robin Landa

The design discipline used to be print-based, with each designer a specialist in editorial design, promotional design or identity design. In today’s digital age, many graphic designers need to be interdisciplinary storytellers, as employers and clients call upon designers to quickly conceive and execute grand ideas that engage people across media channels. To be effective, you need to fully understand what each specific media channel can do and how each channel can be utilized to deliver an engaging brand experience and contribute an integral element of the story.  In this session, Robin Landa will show you how to generate concepts that take various forms for a campaign or program, ranging from print and social media to websites, mobile apps and web platforms, and relate each piece through strategy, voice and design.

BEYOND THE BUSINESS CARD: HOW TO REDEFINE & REINVIGORATE NETWORKING FOR A THRIVING CAREER

with Terri Trespicio

A network is not an umbrella—you don’t just reach for it on a rainy day. In fact, if you wait until it’s raining, there’ll be nothing to reach for. Your personal and professional network is perhaps the greatest investment of your career—because no matter what job, opportunity or business you’re interested in, you can’t achieve success without someone else’s help. And while awkward social interactions and business-card exchanges have come to define what we think of as networking, it can be far more valuable if you know how to do it — right. Terri Trespicio believes that you must reframe your approach to networking to see any benefits. Rather than “always be closing,” she believes you should always be opening—yourself and your network up to new people and relationships.
