JOB TITLE: Violence Prevention Specialist
DEPARTMENT: Broadway Youth Center
REPORTS TO: Associate Director, BYC
FLSA STATUS: Full-time; Non-Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Violence Prevention Specialist is responsible for providing individual and group-level intervention services using a restorative justice framework to youth (ages 12 to 24) at Howard Brown’s Broadway Youth Center. Additionally, this person is responsible for providing violence prevention education through community-based activities.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Run support groups for youth who have experienced trauma and whose coping mechanisms may involve inflicting harm on others.
Provide one-on-one support to youth participating in BYC’s drop-in programming.
Lead healing circles for young people involved in conflict at the BYC.
Initiate and conduct community-based outreach.
Assist in the development of educational materials to be distributed to community partners and institutions.
Develop new partnerships with institutions and engage with existing partners to raise awareness about the Violence Prevention Program.
Enter services rendered into electronic health record system and Homeless Management Information System.
Assist with the management and training of volunteers and staff.
Participate in weekly Community Healing, Accountability and Transformation meetings.
Serve as member of the Howard Brown Health Sexual Assault Response Team by participating in monthly meetings.
Provide administrative support to program staff.
Maintain accurate sexual violence prevention knowledge and develop prevention skills by attending regular trainings.
Uphold agency and programmatic policies and procedures, including confidentiality.
Attend all required trainings and meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
High School diploma or GED, or equivalent required.
Strong background in working with at-risk youth, including LGBTQA young people, is highly regarded.
Strong communication and administrative skills, including proficiency with computer systems, is preferred.
Must be comfortable working with the LGBTQA population.
Bachelor’s degree not required, but preferred.
Bilingual – Spanish/English is highly regarded.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Broadway Youth Center is a fast-paced environment where space is limited.
The position regularly requires a flexible schedule of Monday-Friday and occasional evening and weekend hours for outreach, training, and other program activities.
