Maria asks…

Free Online Lessons for the Keyboard?

A family member gave us his old keyboard and nobody in my house knows how to play the keyboard. My uncle moved away, so he can`t teach us, and I am sick of my siblings playing random annoying notes. I want to know how to actually play a real song! Does anyone know where I can get free online lessons for the keyboard?

ConnieManuel answers:

I have a keyboard as well and have learned to play it using this : http://www.zebrakeys.com/ . I suggest buying a piano learning book, or How To Play Piano For Dummies. Research piano classes in the area. Learning to play the piano/keyboard is a real commitment, but once you learn, it’s very much worth it. I quit playing and learning a few years ago and regret it very much now. Here are some links I used to get started on learning when I got my keyboard :

This website is AMAZING for learning piano/key board – it supplies the complete guide on learning the notes, how to read music, how to play the music, etc. Http://www.teach-me-piano.com/

When I started piano, I labeled each note on sheet music with the corresponding finger on your hand to make it easier, then moved on the the names of the notes.

Once you get a hand on your skills and want to find songs to practice, you can use synthesia videos from youtube to learn songs. Synthesia is sort of a piano hero game. The notes fall down on the virtual piano in different colors referring to which hand to use. You can find many different types of songs, from popular songs on the radio to classics. This link is Fur Elise by Beethoven- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I16mgHHoJsk&feature=related . What helps is pausing it between groups of notes that you can handle and practicing that section on your keyboard till you get it down, and then combine it all. There are videos at slower speeds too, so look those up. This is the technique that I used to learn When I Look At You on the piano for a school talent show, and it was a big hit.

Playing the piano, such as any instrument, is a great asset to have. It’s a nice way to impress friends and family and is a great talent to have when school talent shows come around. Sometimes people find a huge passion in it, and you can make composing an amazing career. I hope you have a happy time learning ! <3 :D

"Life is like a piano… What you get out of it depends on how you play it."

P.S.: Love the user name, I love paramore as well<3 such a shame that the farro brothers left… Hope you learn some great songs on the piano by them, they're just wonderful to listen to ! Http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5MnbFaAAx0&feature=fvst

name some sites if you know..thanks!!!

ConnieManuel answers:

I don’t know for sure of a site where you can watch movies online, but I know where you can download them.

If you know how to use IRC or you want to learn, you can download movies. New movies too, still in theaters. Try

http://www.tmdmoviez.com

and if you’re familiar with IRC, the server is

irc.star-fleet.net — channel is #tmd-moviez

Chris asks…

Online College courses on Greek Mythology…?

I’m trying to figure out what courses to take and what online college to go to. My main interest is greek mythology… so if anyone can help me figure out what classes I would need to take to get a carree dealing with greek mythology that would be great.

ConnieManuel answers:

Classics might be the major/course you’re looking for. The University of London’s External Programme offers that course. Http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/2882437.stm

That’s the only online uni that I know of that offers that major. There could be others, but that’s the one I know. They’re a well respected uni with over 150 years experience providing distance learning courses.

Classics involves the study of Greek and Roman society as a whole. It includes history, art, and mythology, but doesn’t rely exclusively on only Greek mythology. I don’t know of any majors/courses that are purely focused on Greek mythology.

For most careers dealing with Greek Mythology, you’d be a professor – so you’d need a PhD. But a classics major is a general-purpose liberal arts degree, which would prepare you for a wide variety of careers – but none of them involving Greek mythology. Again, for that, you’d need to go on for your PhD, or at least for your masters.

Paul asks…

anything about how to learn better creative writing skills?

ConnieManuel answers:

Two things: read and write. Lots. There are tons of books on writing at all levels. The internet is full of unlimited sources for both self-study and online creative writing classes. Many websites and books offer writing prompts and exercises to help you get started. You might check to see if there is a writer’s group in your area, or look for writer’s groups online.

Read, read, read. Read the classics and read junk and genres of all kinds, plus newspapers, magazines, and nonfiction of all kinds. Study the writers’ style and voice. After a while you’ll recognize what makes quality literature stand out

and why the “junk” is inferior. You may not be able to put your finger on it, but you’ll just know.

If you have never penned a short story, an essay, article, etc., start out slowly and work at it. Aim for a well-written paragraph at first…don’t even think “novel.” The more you write, the better you’ll get at it! Good luck.
