Get ready for a weekend of free fun! Here is a snapshot of 19 Free Things to Do in Houston this weekend, June 5-7:



FRIDAY

Get in the groove — MET Dance presents its Sizzling Summer Dance performance Friday, 8:30 pm, featuring a sneak peek of a World Premiere. The event is held at Miller Outdoor Theatre, 6000 Hermann Park Drive. Free tickets for reserved covered seats are available Friday at the Miller Box office, 10:30 am – 1 pm.

Watch dance on the water – The two-day contemporary circus and dance event features talent from all over the world — and Houston. Maravilloso! The Water Festival is a graceful performance on Kinder Lake created by a Belgium artistic company. Performances are 8 pm, 8:30 pm and 9 pm Friday and Saturday. Bring the kids to the special Saturday, 4 pm performance, for an up-close view!

Watch a movie under the moon — Catch a free outdoor screening of The Royal Tennenbaums Friday, 8:30 pm, at Market Square Park. Located at 301 Milam downtown.

SATURDAY

Get educated about hurricanes — Now that we are officially in hurricane season, it’s time for Houston’s annual Hurricane Workshop 2015. This family-friendly event Saturday, 10 am – 3 pm, offers presentations, interactive exhibits, hurricane forecasting and more. Learn about hurricanes from the National Hurricane Center. Located at George R. Brown Convention Center downtown.

Get dirty in the creek — Volunteer and get dirty at the Nature Trails Day Creek Bash Saturday, 9 am, at Jesse H. Jones Park and Nature Center. Join staff and other volunteers to help clean up Jones Park’s waterways. All ages welcome. Closed-toed shoes only. Registration required for this free event by calling 281-446-8588. Located at 20634 Kenswick Dr. in Humble.

Create scratch-foam prints — The first weekend of the month means another Hands On Houston craft for kids at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. This month kids will create scratch-foam prints using fast-drying ink. Come anytime from 11 am – 3 pm. All materials provided free. Due to larger attendance each month, this event is now held outside in the Craft Garden. It will be cancelled with heavy rain. Folks also can join Ann Morton to make hooked-rug modules for our upcoming exhibition. This activity will take place at the same time as Hands On Houston, but will be inside and requires a minimum of 15 minutes. HCCC is located at 4848 Main Street.

Enjoy a creative family day — Ignite your creativity at free Family Day at Contemporary Art Museum Houston Saturday, noon – 4 pm. The afternoon of art-making activities includes collage and printmaking + readings of children’s literature in English and Spanish by La Casa Cultural de Las Americas during the afternoon. Located at 5216 Montrose.

Explore art in the Heights — The First Saturday Arts Market Art After Dark returns Saturday in the Heights. Hours return to the cool summer hours from 6 pm – 10 pm. This monthly outdoor market features more than 30 artists, music, and fun. Located at 548 W. 19th. Check out the listing of artists online.

Celebrate a new low-cost pet clinic — Emancipet is hosting a free, family-friendly grand opening event Saturday, 11 am – 2 pm, to celebrate its new clinic, now open in Houston’s East End. Emancipet offers low cost spay/neuter and preventive veterinary services for pets including vaccinations, microchipping, and heartworm medications. The event will include free refreshments, entertainment, and fun activities for kids. Located at 4410 Navigation Blvd.

Create Indian folk painting — Asia Society Texas hosts another Creation Station free afternoon of fun, Saturday, 1 pm – 4 pm. The afternoon features a storytelling session on Mexican tales and continues with themed craft activities around Mexican and Chinese culture. The event is free with registration. Browse free museums and zoo – It’s Bank of America’s first weekend freebie for cardholders. Get free admission June 6-7 at Houston Zoo, Children’s Museum of Houston, and Museum of Fine Arts. Free admission for individual Bank of America/Merrill Lynch cardholders, not their children.

Play at a fun block party — The GOOF (Garden Oaks/Oak Forest) Block Party offers lots of free fun including a petting zoo, inflatable sports games, Arts Alive!, carnival games, crafts, a fire truck visit, band performances, DJ, mascots and dancing! Chita Johnson, KHOU morning meteorologist, will MC the event. The event benefits Easter Seals/Team Garrett and BASH!-Birthdays and Sharing Hope. Located at Shops at Oak Forest (43rd at Ella).

Engage with trains — Amtrak Train Day is a family-friendly event, free and open to the public. Exhibits from Operations Lifesaver, National Park Service’s Trails & Rails, and more.  Free parking is available. Located at Amtrak Station, 902 Washington.

Watch a movie under the stars — Don’t miss the free outdoor screening of Back to the Future Saturday at dusk at Deer Park’s Dow Park, 610 East San Augustine Street. It’s the 30th anniversary this year!

Love live music outdoors – Waterway Nights at Waterway Square kick off Saturday (and every Saturday in June) for live music, strolling entertainers, and fireworks over The Woodlands! This Saturday features Gary Michael-Dahl Band from 7 pm – 9 pm. Fireworks begin at approximately 8:55 pm. Located at Waterway Square in The Woodlands.

Polka with the accordions — Accordion Kings and Queens is a free performance Saturday, 7 pm, at Miller Outdoor Theatre. The 2015 lineup includes Debra Peters & The Love Saints?, Big Squeeze Champion, and more. Free tickets for reserved covered seats are available on performance day at the Miller Box office, 10:30 am – 1 pm. Miller Outdoor is located at 6000 Hermann Park Drive.

Enjoy classical music — Head to the final round of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Young Artists Competition Sunday, 2 pm. The free performance at Dudley Recital Hall features solos by Texas Music Festival orchestra musicians. You get a chance to vote for Audience Favorite Award! Located at University of Houston, 4800 Calhoun.
