The weekend is almost here with lots of free fun. Here is a snapshot of 13 Free Things to Do in Houston May 16-18:

FRIDAY

Enjoy the opera — Thanks to Houston Grand Opera, Houstonians can experience Johann Strauss’ witty farce, Die Fledermaus (The Bat) for free Friday and Saturday at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Performance begins at 8 pm. Free tickets for reserved, covered seats are available on performance day at the Miller box office from 10:30 am – 1 pm. Limit of 4.

Kick off to summer — The Galveston Island Beach Revue returns Friday and Saturday for loads of family fun. It’s the official kick-off to summer! Friday features music and movie on the boulevard with a free outdoor showing of Girl Happy with Elvis, live music by Brandon McDermott Band, and introduction of 2014 Bathing Beauties before the Saturday contest. Beach Central is located at 2102 Seawall Blvd. Hours are 6 pm – 10 pm Friday and 2 pm – 10 pm Saturday.

Get your Greek on — Enjoy free admission to Houston Greekfest all weekend, thanks to a free admission flyer. But you have to print the flyer here. The event features food, music, dancing and lots of kid-friendly fun. Houston Greekfest is located at St. Basil The Great Greek Orthodox Church , 1100 Eldridge Parkway. The event is open till 10 pm Friday and Saturday and 6 pm Sunday. More details in my previous blog post.

SATURDAY

Kick off to summer — The Galveston Island Beach Revue returns Friday and Saturday for loads of free family fun. The festival opens again Saturday at 2 pm with festival, vendors and craft beer booths. Don’t miss “retro-active games, demonstrations, Charcoal Championship Cookoff Tastings, Southern Star Brewing Company Craft Beer tasting, and live music. The Bathing Beauties Contest kicks off at 5 pm. Beach Central is located at 2102 Seawall Blvd.

Love a community celebration — The Sugar Land Bash returns Saturday, May 17, 4 pm – 9 pm at Sugar Land Town Square. The fun-filled day benefiting Snowdrop Foundation features live music, concessions, face painting, contests, midway games, demonstrations, and more. Cheer on your favorite heroes as the Sugar Land Police Department enter two teams in the Tug-of-War! Proceeds benefit research to eliminate childhood cancer.

Fly a kite — Head to Discovery Green for the Family to Family Network Kite Event Saturday, 4 pm – 8 pm. The afternoon includes free performances by TUTS’ River Performing & Visual Arts Center and more. Bring your kite for free kite-flying fun. This is a fundraiser so activities will be available for a fee including rock climbing, inflatable slide, photo booth, inflatable maze and more. Family to Family Network help support families with disabled children.

Celebrate reading — Grab the family and head downtown for the Children’s Book Celebration Saturday, 12:15 pm – 4:30 pm. The family-friendly event features all kinds of fun and entertainment: performance by Main Street Theater, hands-on activities and crafts, a Flipbook studio, HMNS’s Discovery Dome, Tom’s Fun Band, and a popcorn buffet. Jennifer Holm, author/illustrator of Babymouse, is the featured author with a talk and book signing. Located at the Central Public Library, 500 McKinney.

Learn about the outdoors — If the idea of hiking or camping makes you a little nervous, consider attending free Outdoor Essentials workshops at Bass Pro Shops. Topics include camping and survival basics, survival workshop, clothing basics, and cooking demos all afternoon, It’s all part of their Go Outdoors event this weekend, May 17-18. Bass Pro is located in Katy and in Pearland.

Get creative — Head to Friendswood for the Spring Arts Market Saturday, 10 am – 6 pm. The free, family-friendly fair includes performances, kids’ activities, chalk street art, graffiti artists, and more. Located at Stevenson Park, 1100 S. Friendswood Dr.

Get healthy — The 2014 Family Health Expo brings health topics, family fun, mini Zumba sessions, and more. The free event is located in Missouri City at Kitty Hollow Park, 9555 Hwy 6.

Watch a movie under the moon — Enjoy a free screening of the original 1978 Superman at Katy’s Central Green Park. Movie begins at dusk. Located at 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd. in Katy.

SUNDAY

Celebrate Texas — Don’t miss Heritage Family Day Sunday, 1 pm – 4 pm, sponsored by The Heritage Society. The afternoon features activities and crafts celebrating Texas from the beginning with Stephen F. Austin’s colony to the present. Take a tour of 1823 Old Place and mingle with local historic authors. Located downtown at The Heritage Society Museum Gallery, 1100 Bagby.

Engage with nature — The Third Sunday each month Armand Bayou Nature Center provides a free afternoon of nature fun, thanks to the generosity of Dow Chemical. The next one is Sunday, May 18, noon – 5 pm. Hike the trails with a trained naturalist interpreter, view live reptiles, and relive 1895 cultural history of our era by visiting the Hanson House on the Martyn Farm site. The special program is 1 pm – 3 pm but free admission is noon – 5 pm. Located at 8500 Bay Area Blvd. in Pasadena.

Party with your pup — It’s the 3rd annual Party for Pups Sunday, 1 pm – 6 pm, as a birthday party and fundraiser for Unity for a Solution. Don’t miss the free photo booth for you and your dog, drink specials, DJ tunes, and bites from Monster PB&J and Coreano’s. The first 200 will receive gift bags! Located at Liberty Station, 2101 Washington.
