The weekend is almost here! What are your plans? Here is a snapshot of 15 free events to enjoy in Houston March 7-9 with your family and friends:

FRIDAY

Party with the French — The French Cultures Festival arrives downtown at Discovery Green Friday to kick off a month of events sponsored by the French Consulate in Houston. The free outdoor event features music from French musicians plus Houston natives Wild Moccasins from 7 pm – 10 pm. Authentic French food and wine will be available or purchase. Discovery Green is located at 1500 McKinney.

Listen to classical music — The Houston Civic Symphony, our local community orchestra, presents a free concert Friday, 8 pm, at Houston Baptist University’s Dunham Theater. The evening features Young Artist Concerto Winners plus Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 in B minor. HBU is located at 7502 Fondren.

SATURDAY

Celebrate family fun — The huge FUNomenal Family Festival returns Saturday to Discovery Green. The all-day event features Baby Olympics, foam parties, appearances by favorite characters and princesses, moonwalk, rockwall, Jungle Maze, Super Slide and more. The event is 10 am – 4 pm at 1500 McKinney.

Watch Muppets on the big screen — Alamo Drafthouse is presenting free movie screenings of The Muppet Movie this weekend and weekdays for spring break March 10-14. Saturday movie times are 10:15 am at Mason Park (531 S. Mason Road, Katy) and 10:30 am at Vintage Park (114 Vintage Park). Seats are first-come, first-serve. Get a reserved seat by pre-purchasing a $5 food and beverage voucher online.

Love your American Girl — The American Girl Club is a free monthly event at Blue Willowshop Saturday, 10 am. Bring your dolls and celebrate spring with crafts and more. The independent book store is located at 14532 Memorial Drive.

Relax with yoga — Don’t miss the free Blissful Warrior Yoga every Saturday, 9 am, at Discovery Green. This yoga class brings together elements of tai chi, kung fu, balance techniques and energy building poses. Located at 1500 McKinney on the Grace Event Lawn behind The Grove Restaurant. No pre-registration required.

Grab a friend for fun — It’s BYOF (Bring Your Own Friends) day at IKEA Houston Saturday. The day features perks for you and your friends including free workshops (de=cluttering and organization), free IKEA blue bag, gift card giveaways, product discounts, free lunch deducted from your $150 purchase, and a chance to win $1,000 IKEA gift card! Grow patio vegetables — Learn to grow patio vegetables in this free weekly clinic at Cornelius Nursery, Saturday, 10:15 am. Two Houston-area locations: 1200 N. Daily Ashford and 2233 S. Voss.

Experience pioneer cooking — This month’s Second Saturday Settler series features Cast Iron Cooking from 1 pm – 3 pm. The afternoon features demonstrations of 19th century open-fire cooking and tasty samples. Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center is located in Humble at 20634 Kenswick Drive.

Enjoy outdoor fun — It’s another weekend of free family fun thanks to Second Saturday at The Depot. The monthly event in Tomball features themed activities and games, concessions, music and The Flintstones Movie on the giant inflatable screen. Enjoy music by Lisa Drout-Rock, decorate your own pet rock, join in the “Dino Derby” dinosaur race and meet Pteri T-Rex, too. Located at 201 S. Elm.

Gaze at the stars — Learn about the planets, stars and other celestial bodies at Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center’s Stargazing event. Reservations begin February 26. Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center is located in Humble at 20634 Kenswick Drive.

Love live music — Live at Night at Waterway Square continues each Saturday this spring, 6 pm – 8 pm. Fidelity Maxx will be performing at this special event in The Woodlands. Located between Timberloch Place and Lake Robbins Drive. Prices vary for parking in the area.

SUNDAY

Focus on bees — Children will learn all about bees at this month’s Children’s Gardening Series at Urban Harvest Farmers Market. Two sessions: 12:30pm – 1 pm and 1:30 pm – 2 pm. Monthly at Urban Harvest Farmers Market, 3000 Richmond.
