It’s Art Car weekend in Houston — my favorite time of year! The parade definitely celebrates the quirkiness of our town. And to think it started back in 1988 with 40 cars. Now it’s dubbed Houston’s largest free public event with 300,000 spectators and more than 300 cars. Here are some of the creative entries I saw in the parade last year…

Get a sneak peek of some of the fabulous entries in this year’s parade at the Art Car Parade Sneak Peek party Thursday, May 8, at Discovery Green, 6:30 pm-9:00 pm. The free family-friendly evening features live music, kid entertainment, and art cars from the parade.

Then Saturday is the big day for the 27th annual Art Car Parade, 2 pm, along Allen Parkway with more than 300 entries. This year features more than 100 brand-new, never seen before entires!

Grand Marshal this year is Mayor Annise Parker and her family on a special float created by the Houston Art Car Klub. The Starting Line Party opens at 10 am at Allen Parkway and Taft to get up close to the entries. The FPSF Stage kicks off at 11 am along with activities in the Kid’s Zone. The parade runs along Allen Parkway towards downtown and turns to head back down Allen Parkway.

Take advantage of reserved stadium seating in front of the Kid’s Zone at Sam Houston Park. The shaded seats help you get out of the heat plus easy access to clean restrooms and all sorts of food and beverage booths. Reserved seats can be purchased online here through May 9 and picked up at Will Call. Adults are $25 and kids are $15.

True art car fans indulge in the VIPit Party, which is noon to 4 pm. This special ticket offers shaded bleacher seating, free parking, plenty of gourmet food and drinks from local restaurants, and family activities. I have done this, and it is amazing! Price is $150 for adults and $25 for kids.

The Orange Show Center for Visionary Arts sponsors the annual Art Car Parade. It also manages the Beer Can House and Orange Show Monument.
