Position Overview
:
The Engineer is responsible for the development, testing, and implementation of standard/custom lighting products, and associated documentation including drawings, ECNs, BOMs, instruction sheets, and submittals.
Duties
:
1) Provide housing/packaging designs for new lighting products in accordance with various applicable testing standards (UL1598, LM-79, et al). Designs may include:
a) General indoor and outdoor luminaire design
b) Optical design and optimization of non-imaging reflector and lenses
c) Thermal packaging and integration of PCBs into luminaires
2) Create solid models, assemblies, and associated part and assembly drawings. Assist in the creation of trump files
3) Assist in the development of cut sheets, brochures, catalogs and other marketing collateral.
4) Coordinate required certification of new products with commissioning institutions including UL, ETL, DLC, Energy Star, Lighting Facts, et al.
5) Procure components and build fixture assemblies for use in prototypes using engineering sketches and verbal direction. Procure materials and manufacture (or facilitate the manufacture of) metal and plastic prototypes based upon mechanical drawings with equipment in Model Shop or outside rapid-prototyping services as required.
6) Work with other engineers and lab technician to test proof of concept validation issues, validate designs, compliance to standards, and assistance in developing research and component validation roadmaps.
7) Provide information to QC, sales, and customer service as needed. Assist other departments (fabrication, assembly) in the resolution of engineering issues
Qualifications
:
Materials
Knowledge of precision sheet metal design practice, machining/metal-forming, extrusions, plastic injection molding, vacuum-forming, and aluminum die casting.
*Lab Design Testing experience would be a big plus (but not required).
Computer Skills
Solidworks (mid to expert level) 8000 hours minimum
Photopia (or other design lighting tool)
Data-collection software
Manufacturing environment
Use of power tools. Training
Testing
Knowledge of UL1598, UL8750, UL153, LM-79, and LM-80
Experienced in the use of thermocouples, controls, electrical meters and data-collection
Knowledge of integrating spheres, goniophotometers
4-year college degree preferably in mechanical engineering
Hard work ethic. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Communicative and confident.
