Rep. Mark Harmsworth sworn into office for second term
44th District lawmaker returns to Olympia for the 2017 legislative session
Rep. Mark Harmsworth, R-Mill Creek, was sworn into his second term of office in the state Legislature today. As supporters, friends and family viewed from the galleries, Associate Chief Justice Charles W. Johnson administered the oath of office to members of the House of Representatives.
Harmsworth has been asked to continue his leadership role as the assistant ranking member on the House Transportation Committee. The committee considers the transportation budget, sources for transportation funding, and issues relating to transportation policy and agencies, including the Department of Transportation and the Washington State Patrol.
Originally chosen for the position by leaders for the House Republicans in 2015, Harmsworth will serve as one of the leading voices for the caucus on issues heard by the committee.
"It's time to get practical about traffic solutions, we need to get people and goods moving on our state highways and roads. It's great to see projects getting kicked off for the US Highway 2 corridor and the work being done to widen and improve State Route 9," said Harmsworth. "Mobility is a priority. By targeting key improvements we increase safety, improve traffic flow and stop delays."
In addition to his work with the House Transportation Committee, the lawmaker will continue as a member on the House Technology & Economic Development Committee.
"We need to connect the dots between the current and next generation of technology and economic opportunity, while keeping a watchful eye on our investments and privacy protections," said Harmsworth.
Harmsworth was also asked to continue serving on the House Rules Committee. Rather than hearing a specific area of policy, as most other committees, the Rules Committee determines what, and when, bills come to the House floor. In addition, the committee reviews schedules and adopts floor resolutions.
"The oversight responsibilities and the fact this committee touches every piece of legislation before it hits the House floor makes it a great assignment," said Harmsworth. "I'm looking forward to serving on this committee again."
