I’m pretty open about the point that I am not huge on color, but I did add some navy into my decor this year and I’m loving the results. As I transition my home into the warmer months, I was looking for a way to add a summery feel while still sticking with my navy and neutral scheme.

Cane patterns just scream summer to me but, of course, finding something in my desired shade of navy wasn’t super easy.  Like so many things, I just decided to go ahead and make something instead.

This navy cane patterned pillow was so downright easy, you’d be silly not to try it.  It rolled in at under $10 too, which makes it all the more satisfying. A few strips of ScotchBlueTM Painter’s Tape Delicate Surfaces #2080EL and I was on my way. The materials needed are simple enough:

Materials:

Scotch Blue Painters Tape for Multi-Surface 2093EL

Acrylic Paint

Fabric Medium (turns regular acrylic craft paint into fabric paint)

Foam Brush

Plain white pillow

Craft Knife

Step One: Using either a seam ripper or the tip of your craft knife, carefully unstitch about 5-6 inches in one side of the pillow seam.  I unstitched the area on the bottom of the pillow where you can tell that they stuffing was inserted.  Then, pull out all of the stuffing and put it in a grocery bag for later.

Step Two: Lay out eight strips of Scotch Blue Painters Tape on a surface suitable for cutting.  Using a straight edge, cut each strip into three strips.  They’ll be approximately ½” each.

Step Three: Create three parallel rows across the pillow, then another three parallel rows vertically down the pillow. Make sure these lines are as equally placed as possible depending on the size of your pillow cover.

Step Four: Create four parallel lines diagonally across the pillow. Ensure that the lines are going through the corner edges of the large squares as shown.

Then, repeat going in the other direction.

Step Five: Dab the paint on in a stenciling motion.  Do not drag the paint across the pillow. When you’ve covered the entire pillow, let it dry for about 24 hours.  Then, heatset with an iron and was inside out according to fabric medium instructions.

Step Six: Restuff the pillow and sew up the seam.

Now you can marvel at your creation! You’ll be so impressed that you’ll want to make them in all colors, and you can!  I can honestly say, the whole time I was taping and painting I was thinking, “there is a huge chance this is going to be a disaster”.  But when I took that tape off, I was blown away. The tape holds an edge perfectly and makes being creative super easy.  Give it a try!
