Imelda May

"The problem with an artist like Imelda May is that she's so good, it makes a critical review almost impossible to write; her performance is flawless." – Clash Magazine

Imelda May, born in Dublin and raised in the Liberties, may be an unknown name to some, but to many she is already a superstar. She is unmistakable both in her music (a fusion of surf guitars, blues and rockabilly that wouldn't be out of place in a David Lynch film) and her style, with a solitary curl and shock of blonde in her jet black hair. In Ireland, her debut album 'Love Tattoo', which she recorded and released on her own label, has gone Triple Platinum. She has shared a stage with Eric Clapton, Chuck Berry, David Gilmour, Sharon Shannon, Jeff Beck, Shane Macgowan, Kirsty McCall, Van Morrison, Lionel Richie, Wanda Jackson, Paul Brady and Meatloaf. And now, with the release of her new album "Mayhem", she is about to go stellar.

Being the youngest of five siblings , Imelda was the most susceptible to the various influences from her older brothers and sisters, which she could hear constantly through the walls of their two bedroom house. There was folk, the obligatory chart pop, and then there was Elvis. "My brother was a mad Elvis fan, and I found a tape in his room with Elvis, Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent. I thought the music was fantastic."

By the age of nine Imelda had fallen in love with rockabilly and the blues – the only kid in her class who wasn't into Wet Wet Wet. Singing along to rock n roll from an early age, her tastes began to develop and deepen, first with Elmore James and then – " I heard Billie Holiday, and that blew my mind." After a year of art college she dropped out, deciding she would rather sing for a living. At that point, her professional experience was confined to having sung on an ad for Findus Fish Fingers at 14. "A girl in The Liberties was in the music business and she got me this ad, where I sang, 'Betcha never put your finger on a crunchier crumb!' I got £40 for it!" She quickly found work singing with the swing troupe Blue Harlem and rock n roller Mike Sanchez and had an interesting spell of singing in burlesque clubs: "I'd sing while the other girls were onstage. One of them used to take an angle grinder to her crotch and would produce a shower of sparks. One day a spark flew down my throat when I was singing!"

Imelda began singing in clubs when she was 16 years old and had the honour of being occasionally barred from her own shows at Dublin's Bruxelles club for being underage. "I was getting tips from the best musicians in Dublin. One of them said, 'Your voice is great, but it needs to roughen." It was around this time, when driving a tearful Imelda to a gig, that her father asked her "Is your heart broken? Excellent. Now you can sing the blues". Remembered by Imelda as a turning point in her life, from then on her voice developed into the sultry, rich and unique tone you hear today.

By 2006 she was itching to go solo, and formed her own band. "We started out a bit jazzier, but it needed balls and roughing up which it got." Her debut album, "Love Tattoo" was soon released and started to get noticed. Catching the attention of Jools Holland in 2008 she supported him on tour which led to him requesting her to appear on Later. Here she performed to an audience that included Jeff Beck, Elbow and Roots Manuva and afterwards Beck made a point of telling Holland that he was only there to see Imelda. In 2009, Imelda knocked Bruce Springsteen off No. 1 to become the first female Irish artist to top the Irish album charts since Mary Black nearly 20 years ago. She then went on to win Female Artist of the Year at the Irish Meteor Awards. Despite album success, Imelda continued to tour, playing to over 400 000 people in 8 countries across Europe and the US – including, most recently a US tour with Jamie Cullum.

Imelda has not only caught people's attention musically, her striking style and unmistakable cool but quirky 50s look has led her to grace the front cover of the Irish Sunday Times Style, Roberto Cavalli flew her out to perform at his private party during the Milan Fashion Week.

2010 got off to an auspicious start when Imelda accepted an offer from Jeff Beck to perform with him at the Grammys. This was followed in April by a two night support slot in London with one of her idols, Wanda Jackson.

Her new album 'Mayhem' sees Imelda continue to develop her uniquely modern fusion of classic musical genres. The record not only showcases her exceptional songwriting ability, but also displays some more disparate influences, with first single Psycho seeing Imelda channel the spirit of early PJ Harvey, whilst the heartbreakingly poignant "Kentish Town Waltz" conjures an image of Chrissie Hynde at her most reflective.

This year Imelda will perform at Glastonbury, T In The Park, Womad and Ireland's Electric Picnic as well as touring the UK in May asnd September. She also has three songs – including the legendary "Johnny Gotta Boom Boom" and forthcoming single "Mayhem" featuring on the soundtrack to the new "Wild Target" film starring Bill Nighy, Emily Blunt and Rupert Everett.

Imelda May? In 2011, she bloody well will!

Kim Lenz & the Jaguars

Yes, It's All True: KIM LENZ is back.

The titian-haired, vivacious Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter-guitarist established herself as the top modern rockabilly songstress with a pair of widely praised albums for Hightone Records and rapturously received performances across the States and in Europe; Rolling Stone raved, "If Elvis had been a woman, he probably would have sounded just like Kim Lenz."

After a recording and performing hiatus that left fans panting for her return, Kim is back in the groove with her best recorded work yet, the album It's All True, which she produced herself and is releasing on her own Riley Records imprint. The new collection is a flaming slab of fuel-injected contemporary rockabilly that handsomely shows off Kim's sass, energy, and romp-stomping vocal chops. It secures her position in the small pantheon of great female rockabilly singers that includes Wanda Jackson and the late Janis Martin – singers with whom Lenz has shared many a stage. And it displays the genre's diversity and impact.

The new album features the fearsome instrumental firepower of the reconvened Jaguars – guitarist Nick Curran, bassist Jake Erwin, and drummer Scotty Tecce – and a guest vocal appearance by Southern California's soulful rockabilly maestro Big Sandy. The 12 tracks include seven Kim Lenz originals, a track co-written by Kim and Big Sandy, a number crafted expressly for Kim by the Lucky Stars' Sage Guyton, and two rampaging covers.

Back in the game and ready to rock, Kim Lenz and the Jaguars will support It's All True with live appearances around the country in the spring and summer of 2009. The album is available at retail (via Burnside Distribution), at concert dates, and from Riley Records.

Ruthless, gritty and hellbent Rock n' Roll!!! This trio hail from the streets of Liverpool and are being tipped as the UK's break-out band of the year! With a relentless touring schedule, FURIOUS have been cemented as one of the hardest working & wildest live acts around. Their appeal crosses so many borders and with their self penned songs about teenage life today, they are turning Britain's kids onto a wild Rock 'n' Roll beat.

The Chop Tops

Chop Tops is a rockabilly trio composed of Gary "Sinner" Marsh (vocals), Shelby Legnon (guitar), and "Hotrod" (bass). They've been honing their savvy rock style since the mid-'90s, building momentum in and around their SoCal groundings. Debut album Tales of Hot Rods, Hot Broads and Lucky Odds was issued on Swillbilly in 1999. Always Wild appeared a year later on Rolling Rock, but it was the blistering set on Evil Six that caught the attention of Brian Setzer. Impressed by their third album, Setzer included the Chop Tops on his '68 Comeback Special in August 2001. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

Los Straitjackets

Jet Set, the all-new album from Los Straitjackets, is a collection of 14 carefully crafted guitar-driven songs that prove to be the most diverse and inventive of Los Straitjackets' oeuvre. Jet Set also marks the return of Danny Amis (Daddy-O Grande) to the band after recovering from a difficult battle with Multiple Myeloma. The album was recorded at The Pow Wow Fun Room studios in Los Angeles with producer and friend Janne Haavisto (of Laika And The Cosmonauts) and includes a few guest appearances by The Basic Cable Horns (from the Conan show) and Finnish actress and musician Irina Bjorklund. Jet Set delivers the high-energy rock and roll instrumental music fans have come to expect from Los Straitjackets.

With a sound that combines the classic strumming of 1960s surf music---reminiscent of Dick Dale's guitar work---with the element of punk, Los Straitjackets have carved a successful niche for themselves in the world of alternative rock. Comprised of Eddie Angel and Danny Amis on guitars, Pete Curry on bass, and Jimmy Lester on drums, the instrumental band has performed original as well as classic tunes, while always focusing on pop culture and fun. Their trademark Mexican wrestling masks, matching clothes, and custom-made matching guitars have made them one of the more visually exciting bands to see in live performance.

The Jive Aces

Having become the first ever band to reach the semi finals of Britain's Got Talent in 2012 following up with a performance for Her Majesty The Queen as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and performances for both the Olympic and Paralympic celebrations, The Jive Aces have truly established themselves as the UK's top Jive & Swing band.

DALE ROCKA & THE VOLCANOES

Dale Rocka & the Volcanoes were formed as a band in 1998 and ever since they’ve been a flagbearer for straight rockabilly in their native island of Sicily and abroad. The energy and elegance of their live shows have produced a solid reputation throughout Europe, and for this reason they’re constantly busy with concerts around the continent. Despite having very broad musical tastes, it is clear that Dale Rocka & the Volcanoes get mostly inspired by the pioneers of rock, either famous or unknown. Dale Rocka & the Volcanoes have previously recorded for Doghouse, Tail, Impero and lately Sleazy Records. All of their recordings so far came out on 45 rpm vinyl records: while their first records “You Get Alone, I’ve Got The Blues” and “You Keep My Love Handy” are long time sold out now and sought after by record colllectors, the last one, “Hot Rockin’ Baby” is getting plenty of positive reviews from music magazines and feedbacks from fans. The release of a full album by Dale Rocka & the Volcanoes is likely in the near future, and until then watch out for their live gigs when they come around your town!

LIL MO & THE DYNAFLOS

Lil' Mo and the Dynaflos came about one night around 2004 at the World Famous Derby Club in Los Angeles as "Lil' Mo" Morris Everett and Cliff Quan discussed their love for Doo Wop music. Lil' Mo, being a veteran of previous vocal groups and Cliff, being an avid Doo Wop listener and rockabilly guitar

player, decided "Why not give it a go ourselves"? The rest is history!

The original group consisted of 5 vocalists and 4 musicians, whom Cliff recruited from the creme of the crop of L.A.'s Rockabilly and '50's Rhythm and Blues scene. Unlike other vocal groups, Cliff's idea was to make the band an integral part of the group (instead of a vocal group with a back up band). This idea was to form the structure and sound of "The Dynaflos". The current line-up consists of 4 vocalists and 4 musicians.

The Dynaflo's set consists of some obscure 50's-60's Doo Wop, some standards and some original tunes. Something for everyone! They blend their style of 50's, 60's, Doo Wop and R&B, with an upbeat, rockin' band. Combine that with a high energy stage show and you'll find one undeniably fun, hard working, Doo Wop group that is hard to ignore. They are becoming high in demand at car shows, swing dances, parties, clubs, etc... and have played two very successful shows overseas, in Spain and in England. Their original music have been used in movies such as Lionsgate Film's "The Winning Season" and highly acclaimed independant film "The Deuce of Spades".

Friends there are a lotta folks appropriating the 'Hillbilly' handle these days ,but where the Doel Brothers are concerned that's the way they walk. These fella's write songs that feel like they jumped off a Mississippi jukebox in 1954

The Rhythm Shakers

The founding members of the Rhythm Shakers sat down in a Los Angeles apartment one day and listened to the demo’s they had just recorded and knew they had started something special: All the viciousness and savagery of a hardnosed 50’s Rock and Roll band fronted by a charismatic lead singer. Except something was different this time; the lead singer was female. Marlene Perez is not the typical female lead singer, she trades sweet for savage and kind for killer. Having toured all over Europe with notable appearances at High Rockabilly, Viva Las Vegas, and The Rockabilly Rave the bands full length album “Flipsville” (2008), their two 45 RPMs, and their two songs on the “Wild Party” 10 inch have projected their power on many rock and roll dance floors. It is the Rhythm Shakers goal to keep things interesting by recording Rockabilly, Rock and Roll, and Blues oriented tracks with Marlene’s growling vocals ever present on top. The Rhythm Shakers continue to embark on multi-date European tours and frequent Rockin’ festivals all over the world as they write and record their second full length album.
