Peanut Butter Wolf

As a young kid growing up in San Jose, Chris Manak sought out an escape from suburbian life in the Silicon Valley. The age of nine was his coming of age. This was the year he discovered sports (Pittsburgh Pirates), video games (Pac man), girls (Anita Balderama), and hip hop ("Rappers Delight"). Alongside partner Sweet Steve, young Chris fashioned primitive mix-tapes (using the pause button) and ran amok at the local roller rink.

He took on the name Peanut Butter Wolf in the late-80s when he realized that, in an odd turn of events, a girlfriend's youngest brother feared the "peanut butter wolf monster" more than death itself. Wolf and his more conventionally-named counterpart, Charizma, began recording in 1989 when the two were still teenagers. Within three years, the duo signed a contract with Hollywood Basic (Disney) alongside label mates Organized Konfusion and DJ Shadow. Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf were riding high, touring Europe, receiving press in magazines such as Billboard and (a then newspaper format) Urb , hanging with radio legends Sway & King Tech on Wake Up Show and performing live shows with groups like House of Pain, Nas and The Pharcyde. Then, in December of 1993, Charizma tragically lost his life. Stunned, Wolf temporarily gave up on music.

After releasing the song "Just Like A Test" with Charizma for David Paul's Bomb Hip Hop Compilation early in 1994, Upstairs Records, a label known primarily for house music, approached Wolf to record an instrumental LP. Thus, the Peanut Butter Breaks was born; the record became the Wolf's calling card, leading to meetings and collaborations with like-minded DJs like Q-bert, Cut Chemist and Rob Swift.

After the release of Peanut Butter Breaks, PB Wolf found himself in demand as a producer. His track for the all-scratching compilation Return of the DJ was labeled "incredible" by The Source magazine. He released a 6 song compilation for South Paw Records in 1995, featuring collaborations with up and coming San Jose MCs. He also produced Kool Keith's first single as a solo artist "Wanna Be A Star." These releases, amongst others, led to a picture disc EP for British label 2 Kool Records.

In 1996, Peanut Butter Wolf founded Stones Throw Records. Charizma's posthumous "My World Premiere" was the single to launch the label. A few highlights in the beginning were the songs "Unassisted" by Rasco, Super Duck Breaks LP by DJ Babu, and hip hop 7" series.

Lately, PB Wolf has moved away from producing (save the odd remix or compilation track) to build the Stones Throw label and to travel as a DJ to Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada, and across the US. Through his willingness to experiment and provide Stones Throw's artists with musical carte blanche, he has overseen the releases of Lootpack's Soundpieces, Quasimoto's The Unseen, Breakestra's Live Mix, Yesterdays New Quintet's Angles Without Edges, Madlib's Shades of Blue, and Jaylib's Champion Sound.

Daedelus (DJ set)

Alfred Darlington isn't your average cookie-cutter musician. From how he looks (early Victorian Dandism), to how he makes music, to how he expresses himself and views the world, his is a very individual, a 'bespoke' outlook.

Alfred was born in Santa Monica in 1977 to an artist mother and psychologist father. Musical from very early on, as a child he was classically and jazz-trained in a number of instruments, but his interests were broad and varied – less a prodigy than a renaissance boy whose obsessions ranged from Greek legend to the mountains of Wales. As a 15 year old he finally persuaded his parents to take him to the Principality. Whilst in a YMCA in London he flipped the radio dial, found a pirate radio station and taped some UK rave and hardcore. "It was my first 'Eureka!' moment in music," he says.

Back in the US he joined local rock bands, jazz bands and ska bands, which he enjoyed but felt limited by,too. At home he was listening to Warp, Ninja and your harder electronic stuff. He started DJing out the more leftfield side of drum and bass and making his own rudimentary productions. They were meant to be drum & bass but they kept turning out different and from his outsider's experiments his own style was born. He chose the name Daedelus as he had a childhood obsession with invention, and what was he doing, after all, if not tinkering and fiddling and experimenting like the "gentleman inventors" of old?

In 1999 he started DJing on Dublab.com for his "Entropy Sessions" and began dropping in his own early demo productions. Carlos Nino (of ammoncontact) had the show after him and usually pushed Alfred out the studio as quickly as possible as he was not so into Daedelus' confrontational DJ style, but when he heard a tranquil Daedelus production he took, in typical Nino style, Daedelus under his considerable wing around the LA scene. Nino placed
Daedelus tracks on two influential compilations and then persuaded Plug Research to release his debut album, "Invention" in 2002, Remixers included Madlib, who later took Daedelus' accordian parts and used them on the Madvillain record, closely followed by his "The Household" EP on Prefuse 73's Eastern Developments label.

In 2003, he was booked to play a show in San Diego by Brian Crabtree and Peter Siegerstrong and they asked him to test out an early prototype of the Monome box. "It's a Non-traditional electronic instrument," Daedelus explains. "Basically it allows for massive improvisation." Since then Daedelus has continued to use this revolutionary box, bringing much genuine liveness to the sometimes static world of performed electronic/dance music.

In 2003 he did "The Weather" album with Busdriver and Radioinactive and the remix album "Rethinking the Weather" on Mush records (home of cLOUDDEAD, also on Big Dada/Ninja Tune). 2004 saw the release of "Of Snowdonia" on Plug Research, the album with which Daedelus says he first "felt true artistic confidence, finding a true voice. I was finally in the right zone."

There was certainly no let up in his creativity. Also in 2004 he released the concept album "A Gent Agent" on tiny German label Laboratory Instinct. The 2005 album "Exquisite Corpse" on Mush album featured the likes of TTC, Mike Ladd, MF Doom. Ninja signed Daedelus for UK/Europe (a relationship which has reached its full expression on "Love To Make Music To," his first album for the label worldwide and put together with the help of their team). In 2006 "Denies the Days Demise" came out, a record showcasing his love of Brazilian music. Last year he released his first live album, "Live At the Low End Theory," and "The Fairweather Friends EP". Later this year will see the release of his collaboration with his wife, Laura Darling, as Long Lost!

And while his reputation has grown internationally, his place in the LA scene has also solidified. The musician that many of the hottest names in the city turn to for everything from bass clarinet licks to advice on obscure electronics, Daedelus has worked extensively with Taz from Sa-Ra, the pair of them opening for the likes of DJ Assault, Justice and Two Live Crew as well as appearing in Erykah Badu's most recent video.

As for "Love To Make Music To," Daedelus says that this album is "the imaginary memory of a time that never was! It's my drug/love record, harking back to that time in the YMCA in London, when I first heard rave…"

High Places

igh Places is Mary Pearson and Rob Barber. Mary and Rob met while Mary was completing a music degree in bassoon performance and Rob was working in visual art, teaching lithography and etching at an art school. Both were performing as solo musicians at the time. Mary relocated to New York from Michigan in late spring 2006, and the two soon after began collaborating under the name High Places. The name refers to a place where one has a better vantage point and can gain broader perspective; it references a love for mountains, rooftops, and of course metaphorical "high places." The duo has an "exquisite corpse" style of songwriting where they exchange ideas back and forth, challenging one another's expectations, pushing songs to new places, or more aptly, new heights. They began by releasing a number of singles as well as contributing songs to a few compilations. These early and varied works were collected and released in July of 2008 as 03/07-09/07 in advance of tours with Deerhunter and No Age.

Since its inception, High Places has created a signature sound out of using bass-heavy, yet crisp beats, lilting vocal melodies, syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all the while managing to be concise. Overall, the compositions are settled and assured. High Places gravitates toward the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.

In a live setting, the band creates their layered recordings with Mary singing and simultaneously manipulating her vocals with various delay and reverb pedals, while playing some hand percussion, recorders, and creating and controlling various loops. Rob handles the drums triggering a variety of percussive sounds with his drum pads, as well as playing hand percussion, wooden blocks with contact mics, and singing some ambient vocals. High Places' self-titled debut was recorded by Rob and Mary in their apartment in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood between January and May of 2008. They employed a wide variety of instruments to make this album ranging from the more traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles, bass, bells and Kalimba, to the inventive: plastic bags, mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects. The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature, hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and their extending, enveloping branches. Rob created the High Places artwork by using photos taken by both band members. The images are drawn from nature but all have a subtle, mystical, "golden" motif, a fitting frame for the album's recurring themes.

Chrome Canyon

Chrome Canyon is the solo project of composer / producer Morgan Z, who was a member of the NY underground cult band Apes & Androids. Since their break-up Morgan has spent his time collecting a wide range of rare analog synths and gear in his Brooklyn studio while writing, recording and producing his brand of original soundtrack sci-fi / space disco. His remixes (for artist such as Phoenix, Passion Pit, Anoraak, and Erika Spring) have been widely circulated and praised, and his remix of Foster the Peoples "Pumped Up Kicks" was in the Top 20 downloads of 2011 for RCRDLBL.com and released as a b-side to the UK single. His first release "Body Music" was put out by the French label On The Fruit. His first full length "Elemental Themes" is due out later this year.

Triple Chicken Foot

Triple Chicken Foot is a Los Angeles based Old Time stringband. Having played together for more than five years, The Foot has honed their chops and focused in on playing Old Time music rooted in tradition. Spending time with veteran players around Los Angeles and the country, they have soaked up knowledge and techniques handed down through the years. The Foot finds their voice through their repertoire of tunes and songs, be it gospel songs, archaic banjo tunes, or crooked fiddle tunes. Most recently they have become a powerful new dance band on the Square Dance & Contra scene by teaming up with caller Cory Marie Podielski, who has been learning square dance calling from Susan Michaels, as well as joining forces with fiddler, Joe Wack and banjo player, Steve Lewis as the Brownbaggers. They have also recently finished recording their second full length CD titled Tar Rivers.

Buyepongo

With deep roots in South and Central America, Buyepongo draw heavily from the Latino musical culture. Taking their cues from traditional "roots" music of Colombia, Haiti, Belize, Honduras and the Dominican Republic. Buyepongo create a very vibrant polyrhythmic sound by seamlessly fusing merengue, punta, and cumbia. The group's pulse and power is built around the drum and guacharaca(pronounced: wah cha rah ca) giving them an upbeat tropical flare.

Buyepongo is an infectious sonic explosion of blaring horns and syncopated accordion licks. Tight booming bass lines transcend you from the inner city, to a sunny island surrounded by sky blue ocean. Your soul then succumbs to the slaps of the conga as you become hypnotized by the melodious harmonies being sung. You are now in a tropical haven. Get Ready To Dance!

The Record Company

The Record Company is a roots/blues/rock trio based in Los Angeles. Steeped in the classic sounds of Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker along with the jump of Howlin' Wolf, The Record Company have burst onto the scene in a very short time, performing their first show in January 2012. While never trying to simply emulate the great masters, the band have found their own fresh take on the music and can best be described as a group giving a 21st century nod to a timeless art form.

Low Flying Owls

Comprised of Jared Southard on vocals and guitars, Andy Wagner on guitars and keyboards, Michael Bruce on bass, and Sam Coe on drums,

Low Flying Owls' music evokes early Pink Floyd, T. Rex, The Dandy Warhols, The Stooges, Mercury Rev and even The Doors, yet is uniquely and utterly their own. Low Flying Owls are the intersection at which British shoegazer rock and California psychedelic pop meet, their music a "beautifully crafted sonic landscape" (CMJ New Music Report).
Together since 2001, Low Flying Owls have forged a reputation as one of the best bands in Northern California, drawing sold out crowds to their shows on the Sacramento, Bay Area and Southern California club circuits. The band has shared the stage with luminaries such as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Clinic, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Creeper Lagoon, The Warlocks, The Stratford 4, Eyes Adrift, Jonathan Richman and Mike Watt, to name but a few.

Low Flying Owls' critically-embraced "Take The Scenic Route" album, released in 2002, marked the band's first full-length release, followed by the release of a self-titled EP, both released through The Americans Are Coming Records, the label owned and operated by the band and their manager. Then, in early 2003, singles label Isota Records released a 7" special limited edition single featuring a Low Flying Owls track called "Georgie Shot Johnnie", taken from Low Flying Owls' first album for Stinky Records, "Elixir Vitae".

"Elixir Vitae", released in North America on Stinky Records in August 2003, marks Low Flying Owls' national album debut, and showcases Southard's lyrical penchant for approaching morbid subject matter with an ironic, satirical twist -- which Southard describes as a sort of "dark happiness" -- and marrying this "happy-go-unlucky" approach with a musical mélange of explosive guitar-driven rock, British-influenced pop and swirling psychedelic grooves. Ranging from the eerie yet epic "Looks of A Killer", to the balls-out rock & roll groove of "Glad To Be Alive", to the twisted romanticism of "Strange Connection", to the dark odyssey of "Mama Said", to the Beatles-esque grandeur of "Georgie Shot Johnnie", "Elixir Vitae" is hypnotic and richly textured, its lush and complex melodies complimented by idiosyncratic and irreverent lyrics that would do psychedelic rock icons Syd Barrett and Roky Erickson proud.

Having garnered both critical acclaim and college radio play throughout North America for "Elixir Vitae", Low Flying Owls are now poised to make their mark in the UK, where legendary British DJ Steve Lamacq has been spinning their record on his influential BBC1 program.

In the Fall of 2003, Low Flying Owls mounted their first ever national US tour, culminating in a blistering performance at the CMJ Music Festival in New York City in October. The band will be hitting the road again, starting in January 2004, for an extensive U.S. tour, to include an appearance at the 2004 South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Imperial Teen

Imperial Teen was formed in San Francisco in 1995 by Roddy Bottum, Lynn Perko, Jone Stebbins and Will Schwartz. A pop aesthetic of crunchy guitar riffs and classic boy/girl harmonies quickly developed, finding all four members switching off on instruments and taking turns behind the mike. The band had barely been playing together for six months when they landed their first record deal (London / Universal) and found themselves in the studio. The result was the amazingly fresh and joyous Seasick, which tickled the fancy of many a critic and music fan alike, with its infectious pop grooves standing out in a musical climate dripping with grunge. After several unforeseen roadblocks (label inertia, recording delays) Imperial Teen went on to release What Is Not To Love in 1999, and managed to garner even more praise and adoration worldwide. They even scored an MTV-style breakthrough with their single Yoo-Hoo which landed on the Jawbreaker soundtrack, with an accompanying video featuring Rose McGowan.

After parting ways with Universal during the now infamous major label purge of a few years back, Imperial Teen miraculously found their way over to Merge and we couldn't be happier!

Tijuana Panthers

Surf Rock band from Long Beach, California.

VUM

I Recommend it- Henry Rollins

Totally ruling LA noir re-imagining of what the second Suicide record might have sounded like if Polly Jean Harvey fronted the band instead of Alan Vega. Hints of surf guitar bring you back to the west/best coast and give the whole happening a woozy, psychedelic glow. Featuring a former member of Lion Fever and Everlovely Lightningheart, it is extremely limited, this is hands-down the sexiest Living Tape yet! LIMITED TO 100

Only unique souls with a deep knowledge of strange music, film, and prog mastery would have the desire and ability to intently appreciate or create the psychedelic minimalism that VUM is currently crafting for our cranial delight.
The most delicious psychedelic album I've heard from a contemporary band. Vum – 'Strange Attractor'. ~Dirty Jeff

The intelligent and enigmatic two-piece, VUM (womb), specializes in a paradoxical type of music. It is clearly minimalist by nature; yet, like the stamp of only so many adept masters, i.e., Neu!, their music spews forth an impressive wave of sound. Drum and percussion beats drone monotonously throughout and beneath most of VUM's tracks, providing a stability that sustains the security of the back of your mind, while two necromancers cast layers of spells over the top of the intense progressions. Christopher Badger weaves sticky webs of keys, using organ, piano, synthesizer, and even a Fender Rhodes, while Jennifer Pearl injects piercing, shattering, splattered guitar and slide riffs. In fact, like an orc that is hardly recognizable as a tortured elf, much of Jennifer's electric guitar work is just barely perceptible for what it truly is: a seriously manipulated form of psychedelic surf guitar. The magic is fertilized by the lady's deep shamanistic vocals, both eerie and beautiful in nature – chanting poetic lyrics of foretelling and portending evocations, laced with the severe solemnity and mystery of truly submerged artists.

VUM's debut, 'Strange Attractor', irresistibly recalls to my mind some of the essence of Pink Floyd's 'More' album, which goes perfectly in hand with the fact that I also see VUM providing the soundtrack to some bizarre and brilliant foreign or indie film. Badger and Pearl possess a fluid chemistry that coalesces like the wind blowing dandelion seeds up a barren mountainside. I truly cannot wait for a second album to take root, and have meanwhile been grateful for Albino Crow Records' beautifully packaged re-release of 'Strange Attractor'.

The Lions

The LIONS are Los Angeles' premier all-star reggae band. The result of an impromptu recording session by some of the scene's most soulful and notable musicians and singers, The LIONS created grooves that went beyond Jamaican music by combining new and traditional rhythms, and dub mixing mastery with the global sounds of Ethiopia and Colombia resulting in their freshman LP Jungle Struttin' (Ubiquit...y Records 2008).

Since the Ubiquity release a series of 45's have been released on their own Lions Bread label garnering accolades from fans like KCRW's own Jeremy Sole who says: ""Like Daniel, I would step into The Lions' den for this sound! Yes they are fierce - the kings of the jungle when it comes to skank and riddim inna classic fashion. The Lions' new record marks a sweet revival of Dub, Rocksteady and perfect 3-part harmony that would make the legendary rootsmen proud."

Given the popularity of the last year's 7" 45 vinyl single "This Generation" b/w "New Girl," The Lions have released a second 45 "Roll it 'Round" b/w "Pieces of A Man". The combination of MC/actor Black Shakespeare and crooner Malik Moore shine once again on "Roll It 'Round," while singer/actor Alex Desert rides the rocksteady rhythm on "Pieces of a Man." This vinyl will also be available in limited quantities at Joshua Tree Music Festival until the new LP This Generation drops in July 2011.

With four vocalists backed by eight (and sometimes nine) musicians, their live set transcends any particular genre but is best described as a healthy mix of vocal and dub tracks, balancing classic reggae and soul cuts as well as a healthy portion of originals. The LIONS live is like the best summer party you can barely remember.

The LIONS have shared the stage with Gregory Isaacs, Sly & Robbie, Bunny Wailer, Distant Relatives (Nas and Damian Marley), Michael Rose, Horace Andy, The Abyssinians, Tarrus Riley, Fat Freddy's Drop, Antibalas, The Heptones, The Aggrolites, Bedouin Soundclash, Breakestra, Connie Price & the Keystones and Dengue Fever. The Lions repertoire has been heard on USA's hit series Burn Notice ("Hot No Ho", "Thin Man Skank," "Givin Up Food For Jah"), the Funk Aid For Africa compilation ("Jungle Struttin'") and the Box of Funq compilation ("Hot No Ho").

Vex Ruffin

On paper Vex Ruffin's music is simple: an untrained punk musician who uses a few basic instruments in uncomplicated ways, he calls the style 'minimalist.' Although it may not seem like it upon first listen, Vex's music is rooted in sampling and hip hop beat-making culture. The SP 303 sampler provides the drums and other sounds, a purchase inspired by Madlib.

Vex is the first and only artist signed to Stones Throw Records on the strength of an unsolicited demo sent through the mail. Peanut Butter Wolf recalls, "It was kind of a fluke that I listened. I just liked the drawing on the cover so I decided to check it out. I called the phone number on the CD and Vex thought I was his friend playing a practical joke."

These days, Vex is playing shows around LA and OC as a 3-piece band while getting ready for his debut EP release on Stones Throw in July and his full length at the end of 2011. He just played his dream gig at The Smell and is now ready for Coachella and 106 & Park.

Vinyl Williams

Space cruisin' teal pop driven by hypnotic kraut rhythms and shoegaze phantasms.

Vinyl Williams is a lifelong music & art project by Lionel Williams. Works include improvisations in Berlin w/ Machinedrum, Verity Susman of Electrelane, Jochen Arbeit of Einstuerzende Neubauten, with help of The Mindpirates. Exhibitions in LA, NY, Seoul, Berlin. Tours include USA and S. Korea.

Karmic

In 2004, Laura Baruch and Peter Kastner met, sparking a musical evolution. The combination of Laura's passion for melody and lyrics along with Peter's rhythmic and melodic genius birthed the versatile sound of Karmic. In 2008, Laura and Peter were introduced to, drummer/pianist, Steve Aho, and, guitarist, Blake Straus, who became an integral part of the band. Steve's exceptional musicality and Blake's unconventional guitar riffs transcended Karmic's sound to the next level. For the past year, the band has been working on their debut album, Karmic, which will be released in the summer of 2012.

Apple Brains

Apple Brains' mission is to get kids big and small to discover the joys of fruits, vegetables, and good health! Allen "Apple Brains" Bleyle started honing this focus working as a "Nutrition Musician" at Network For a Healthy California, where he penned songs for Head Start and Elementary school classrooms about fruits and veggies. Writing and performing directly for kids ensured the songs to be kid tested and approved. Once wielding enough material, he and friends recorded Apple Brains' debut album, "Get Fruity!!" to overwhelmingly positive reviews and happy dance moves of delight by kids all over.

Leftover Cuties

Some things are eternal. Love songs. California sunsets. The ukulele.

Leftover Cuties embody all of that goodness on their debut album Places To Go. Produced by Tony
Berg (Bob Dylan, Michael Penn, Jesca Hoop), the eleven breezy, sophisticated songs evoke a magic-
hour stroll on the beach with a special someone. Who knows what year it is? Who cares when the
songs are this sweet?

To call Leftover Cuties retro or throwback would be too easy, and frankly dismissive. Sure, the music
fits beside Billie Holiday, but it's also current in its sex appeal, its sophistication, its confidence. The
Cuties' music – plied with upright bass, accordion, the brushed drums, and yes, ukulele – is not
slavishly old-timey, but honors its forebears in the right way. Melody. Sharp playing. Stylized,
confident, character-laden singing.

When Leftover Cuties chanteuse Shirli McAllen steps to the microphone, she commands your
attention because she's got something to say. And a beguiling way of saying it. Sultry. Aching with
longing, yet in control. She's the Cuties' charmer-in-charge, and her silky voice hooks you from the
get-go. You keep looking to see bluebirds landing gently on her shoulder for a listen. You could
hardly blame them.

When McAllen first moved to Los Angeles from her native Israel (where she served in the army), she
was still finding her way musically. "I grew up listening to Israeli music, '90s grunge rock and singer
songwriters," she says. After a couple of years trying to make her mark in the city's crowded singer-
songwriter scene – a lot of good writers and singers, but not a lot of memorable personalities – she
struck up a friendship with multi-instrumentalist Austin Nicholsen.

"One day, Austin walks in with a ukulele," McAllen says, "I thought it was a toy. He started playing
and I started singing the lyrics. We wrote 'Game Called Life' in about five minutes."

With a newly defined musical direction, the duo dubbed themselves Leftover Cuties (more enigmatic
and distinctive than Old Clementines, and sweeter). Stuart Johnson (drums), Ryan Feves (bass), and
Mike Bolger (keys, horns, accordion) came on board to flesh out the sound, and the band was off and
running. In 2010, that sweet tune written on a napkin in five minutes was tabbed as the theme song
for the acclaimed Showtime series "The Big C" starring Laura Linney. The band's fan base swelled,
with fans emailing them from all over the world, and their live shows packing them in.

With a debut album that delivers on the promise of that early success, Leftover Cuties' journey has
just begun. They've got places to go…

Las Cafeteras

Las Cafeteras sprouted in 2006 as students who enjoyed free Son Jarocho classes & decided to share the magic of this folk music from Southern Veracruz with the public. Since then their sound has evolved & they've played at community centers, churches, schools, museums, parties, protests, youth conferences, theaters, festivals, weddings, & art exhibits.

Duniven

"LA rock n roll troubadour Patrick Duniven and his band (who collectively are known as Duniven) plays the kind of rich, Americana style music that is reminiscent of many great American rock heroes. Listening to a track like 'Passage to Nowhere' it's easy to hear traces of Dylan, Petty and Springsteen. Duniven skillfully avoids repetitive territory though, instead continuing the tradition with his own take on the genre" – Mp3.com

"There are few artists who can appear out of nowhere and have a lasting presence that resonates long after they emerge. Since first catching wind of Dunivens sound less than a year ago, it can be guaranteed he's one of those artists who's going to make that imprint possible. He brings a captivating and poetic performance to the stage.
Having spent the rest of 2011 supporting his first LP 'I Need to Try for Her' with local shows, an East Coast tour and a landmark performance at ASCAP's CMJ showcase, it's a wonder he's already found time to get back in the studio and hit us hard with his next EP 'These Dreams' – released on April 30th (the final night of his April, Mon night residency at The Satellite) But Duniven has raised the bar for all new and driven musicians to contend for the spotlight yet again" – Mary Broadbent (The Deli Magazine)

Pilgrim

From the hallowed halls of ancient tombs to the shimmering slopes of frozen mountain peaks, an archaic dirge resonates faintly and eternally— the lingering of a sound once so huge that it could be heard across oceans in distant lands. It was said that long ago, three men harvested the power of sonic amplification through arcane wizardry and dark bargainings with powerful demons, and that they used this power to create a band with powerful, heavy music unlike any that had ever been heard before.

This ancient fellowship is none other than the almighty PILGRIM, a three-piece doom metal band from Rhode Island, USA. With a mix of destruction, misery and beauty, these young disciples of doom blend a surprisingly original sword & sorcery feel with the classic chest-caving heaviness of the masters: Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Reverend Bizarre and Pentagram. Their thick walls of majestically darkened guitar, massive booming bass, and dangerously powerful yet calculated drumming lull listeners into an intense dream-like trance, abducting them to places they never knew were dwelling within their own minds.

The band formed in early 2010 and was built on the worship of "true doom metal". Krolg, the Slayer of Man (drums), Count Elric the Soothsayer (bass) and The Wizard (guitars and vocals) have set out on a holy pilgrimage of domination through amplification.

Tucked away high up in the US' New England coastline, you can find PILGRIM making their fabled pilgrimages to New York City to showcase their mysterious songwriting for shadowy un-lit rooms of coked-out metal-heads.

PILGRIM is a sonic documentation of the friendship of 3 young men inspired and awe-stricken by the dark sounds of traditional doom metal. Something sinister always seems to be following in their footsteps. Hear them soon, before it's too late…"
