Ole Miss Football: The Biggest Game of the Season Awaits
Ole Miss is 1-1 on the young season, but no game will be as significant as Saturday’s tilt with Alabama.
Yes, Ole Miss lost to Florida State on Labor Day night. Yes, the Rebels bounced back against Wofford on Saturday to improve to 1-1. Throw out those games though. This is the one that matters. Want to win the SEC West? Beat Bama. Want to win the SEC Championship? Beat Bama. Want to have any chance of making the College Football Playoff? Beat Bama.
Now, you might say Ole Miss beat Alabama the last two years and did not take advantage of it by winning the SEC West. That is true.

Hugh Freeze is Relaxed, but Nick Saban is Wound Tighter than a Two Dollar Watch
Hugh Freeze and Nick Saban are a study in contrasts.
Ole Miss and Alabama each beat their inferior opponents by almost equal scores last Saturday, but the difference in post-game styles was stark. While Freeze is somewhat relaxed, expressing confidence that his staff will do the best job it can to get the Rebels ready for the Saturday showdown, Nick Saban was tighter than the top on a new jar of pickles.
“I don’t know that I’ve ever been this disappointed after winning a game, maybe ever,” said Saban, after the 38–10 win over Western Kentucky.

The story behind Katy Perry’s legendary College GameDay picks at 2014 Alabama-Ole Miss game
A private plane landed in Oxford, Mississippi somewhere just before sunrise on Oct. 4, 2014.
About the same time, Michael Thompson was arriving at his office on the Ole Miss campus. A few hundred yards away, Lee Fitting was settling in for a wild day of work. Both were waiting on the prized cargo arriving around 6:30 a.m.
Not long after, Katy Perry stepped into Thompson’s building.
That Katy Perry.
“I just remember thinking this is going to be the craziest day probably of my career,” said Thompson, the Ole Miss senior associate AD for communications and marketing.

Ole Miss Football: Injury Bug Hits the Rebels Early in the Season
The 2016 Ole Miss football season is only two weeks old but the Rebels have been dealt a season’s worth of injuries. The injury bug has infested the football team early this year.
Ole Miss started this season with a loss against Florida State. However, the biggest losses of the year so far came on the injury front. The football team has suffered a few tough injuries. A couple of those injuries came in positions in which the Rebels were already thin.
During the first game of the year against Florida State, the Rebels suffered two devastating injuries. Ken Webster went down early in the game while defending a pass. By the way, he went down many speculated the worst. Unfortunately, it was bad. According to the Coach Hugh Freeze, Webster tore “every ligament in his knee.” He will be forced to miss the rest of the season.

It’s already Ole Miss-Alabama week? Right on.
It’s likely that last weekend’s Nick Saban meltdown (while his team was winning by multiple touchdowns) had plenty to do with getting ready for Ole Miss and avoiding an Ole Miss over Alabama three-peat. No team has done it yet during Saban’s era, and you know he’s going to be riding his assistants (especially Kiffin) hard this week to ensure it doesn’t happen.

NFL Rebels Weekly Update
Here at OleMissSports.com, we are proud to update Rebel fans on the exploits of our former players who lace up their cleats on Sundays in the NFL. Ole Miss has a big presence in the league again this year. There are currently 19 former Rebels on NFL rosters, including two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, recent Super Bowl participants Brandon Bolden and Michael Oher, and 2016 first-round draft picks Robert Nkemdiche, Laquon Treadwell and Laremy Tunsil.
Twelve former Rebels made appearances in the first week of the 2016 season. Both Donte Moncrief and Mike Wallace scored for their respective teams.
Here’s a rundown of how each former Rebel performed in week one of the 2016 NFL Season:

Rushed once for 4 yards and had a tackle and fumble recovery on special teams for New England’s first regular-season game vs. Arizona in a 23-21 win.

A member of the 49ers’ practice squad.
#16 CODY CORE | WR | Cincinnati Bengals
The sixth-round pick did not see action for Cincinnati’s first regular-season game victory over the Jets. Remains third on the team’s receivers depth chart.
#27 SENQUEZ GOLSON | CB | Pittsburgh Steelers
Did not see action for Pittsburgh’s first regular-season game victory over Washington due to injury. Looking to return by November.
#74 WOODROW HAMILTON | DT | New England Patriots (PS)
A member of the Patriots’ practice squad.
#77 JOHN JERRY | OG | New York Giants
Beginning his second year with New York, he started at guard for the first-regular season game victory over Dallas (20-19).
#23 KENDRICK LEWIS | S | Baltimore Ravens
Made one tackle and helped Baltimore win their first regular-season game over the Bills (13-7).

Started at WR for Baltimore, logging three receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown in a 13-7 victory over Buffalo.

Did not see playing time in Tampa Bay’s first regular-season win over Atlanta (31-24). Remains second on the depth chart at defensive end.

Rebels Volleyball Position Watch: Setters
There is no drama for Ole Miss Volleyball when it comes to the most important positon on the court, at least not when it comes to the starting job. Senior Aubrey Edie (Fayetteville, Arkansas), is a 4-year starter and will enter conference play this season as the best setter in school history. Her counterpart, freshman Jordan Fate (Fairview, Texas) will look to acquire the positon after Edie leaves her fingerprint on the program.
Edie, the 6 foot setter, began her final year as a Rebel with hot hands setting the career assists record (3,970 to date). She has had an outstanding career thus far at Ole Miss setting the single-season assist record with 1,322 and becoming the second player in the history of the program to earn CoSIDA Academic All-American honors. In only three weekends of play this year, Edie has been named SEC Setter of the Week, ranks fifth in the Southeastern conference with 19.55 assists, and set a single-match record with a career-high 63 assists.
“I am really proud of her for breaking records; they get tougher and tougher to break as the program history goes on,” said head coach Steven McRoberts. “She is consistent and the best setters are the ones that you don’t notice a whole lot, they just do their job. She is as good of a setter as I have ever had.”
Edie today is 30 assists away from the 4,000 mark and will spend the next two months giving her team everything she’s got to make it to her first NCAA Tournament. Fate will continue to learn from Edie and push her teammates in order to prepare for her start in the 2017 season.
Fate joined the Rebels as an AVCA Under Armour Honorable Mention All-American and PrepVolleyball High School All-American. During her time at LoveJoy High School she was named to the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State 4A Player of the year and was a member of Texas Girl Coaches Association 5A All-State Team. Fate served as a team captain for four years at Victory Volleyball Club located in Plano, Texas. She is hoping to use her previous experience in addition to the knowledge she is gaining from Edie to lead the Rebels in the spring and the remainder of her time at Ole Miss.
“We are confident in her for the future. She is a competitor and a winner,” said McRoberts. “She has a calm presence about her and she is not afraid to have the ball in her hands when the match is on the line.”
While this positon may not appear as a competition to an outsider, Coach McRoberts is very confident that one of the only reason’s his team has started off the season 9-1 is because of Fate and what she brings to the team on the other side of the net.
“She is raising the level in our gym,” said McRoberts. “We had days in preseason where the only change we would make would be setter and she would win with the first rotation, there wasn’t a huge difference in the game.”

SEC Quarterback Power Rankings, Week 2: First-year starters on the rise
Week 2 was a lot kinder to the SEC than Week 1, when several quarterbacks struggled to live up to their preseason billing.
This past Saturday, the best conference in America put together a few pretty impressive performances at the game’s most important position. You can’t go 10-0 in out-of-league games unless your QBs are playing well.
In particular, several of the fresh faces have begun to establish themselves at their respective programs. In particular, Austin Allen of Arkansas and Luke Del Rio of Florida threw the ball well in their second career starts. Each is now 2-0 and starting to gain the confidence necesssary to succeed on the big stage.
More encouraging: The no-rhyme-or-reason rotations we saw under center on opening weekend have settled down to some degree. Sean White of Auburn, for example, benefited greatly by not having to look over his shoulder.
