Oxford, Mississippi is home to the Sit N Rock Quilt and Sewing Shop located on West Jackson Avenue. A Serger’s Celebration will be held at the Oxford Shiners Club on March 25, where classes will be taught by Baby Lock Ambassador, Lori Hernandez, on how to use the serger sewing machine.
Classes will begin with basic serger techniques. Attendees will learn skills such as belt loops pin tucks, piping, ruffling, binding and more. Anyone with an interest in learning about sergers and how to use them is invited to attend. There are no special qualifications required, but the minimum age requirement to participate in the event is 12 years of age.
The primary goal of the event is to introduce sergers to a wider audience and to better educate them on the capabilities of the new technology when it comes to crafting.
“We want people to have fun and walk away with confidence of knowing how to use a serger,” said Margaret Hamilton, owner of Sit N Rock.
The event will showcase the shop itself and let everyone know their goal is to serve everyone’s sewing needs.
In the past, a serger was a machine that was only used to finish off the seams of garments to give them a more professional look. With this event, participants will be able to see all of their capabilities including quilting, gathering, stitching, and so much more.
“Our sergers are much less intimidating to thread and are great machines for fast and easy sewing projects,” said assistant manager Amelia E. William.
The cost to register is $69, which includes lunch provided by Bonefish Grill. Every one that registers will receive a reference notebook that they will create during class along with a gift bag. Students attending will also receive special event pricing on machines. Registration is handled over phone.
