The community is invited to enjoy the Cedar Oaks Guild’s annual Christmas Open House on Sunday, December 15, from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.
The house is decorated for Christmas with an emphasis on children this year. In the upstairs hall, there is a Santa tree with a toy train circling it. Next to the tree is a settee where Santa Claus will be waiting to greet Oxford’s children and listen to their Christmas wishes.
Docents in period dress will be in each of the main rooms to tell the story of the house. Children who come in to listen will receive a cookie for the Christmas cookie bag that they’ll receive at the door. Cedar Oaks Christmas punch will be served in the dining room along with a variety of home backed cookies. Everyone is invited and admission is free.
Cedar Oaks:
Built in 1859 by William Turner, Cedar Oaks is a Greek revival structure that has survived a tumultuous past. The home was the headquarters of General McPherson during Grant’s occupation of Oxford in 1862. Molly Turner Orr gathered a fire brigade to save the home when it was set aflame by occupying Union troops in 1864. Nearly a century later, Cedar Oaks was moved 2.2 miles from it’s original location to safeguard it from the encroachment of commercial development. Presently, the home is maintained by the Oxford-Lafayette Historic Homes, Inc., and is available by reservation for civic clubs, teas, receptions, weddings, and tours.
The stocking are hung from the mantle with care inside Cedar Oaks.
This Christmas tree is in the upstairs hall. It is Santa’s favorite.
