Utility costs can be killer, which is why so many apartment dwellers hesitate to crank up the heat when temperatures drop. With colder weather approaching for most of the country, renters are wise to incorporate a few savvy design and interior tips to help keep interiors warm without encountering high utility costs.

Consider the following four tips for creating a warmer space, sans central heating.

Redecorate with warm decor

The power of interior design isn’t just for aesthetic purposes. While redesigning your apartment for Fall is fun and refreshing, new decor can also make your apartment feel cozier. If you have wood floors, purchase area rugs to keep feet warm during the colder winter months. Find a large, down-filled comforter and use furry throws and pillows to decorate your bedroom for a more comfortable sleep. Search for artwork with texture-rich designs to cover stark white walls and achieve a warm, friendly vibe. Finally, strategically placed candles do wonders for making even bland interiors feel comfortable and cozy – just make sure to blow them out when you’re not home.

Reverse ceiling fan directions

Typically, ceiling fans are intended to cool the inside of apartments and homes. But, since hot air rises, switching the direction of ceiling fans can push warmer air down toward the floor so it doesn’t go to waste above your head. You can save up to 15 percent in heating costs with this simple trick. If you have a newer ceiling fan, set it to spin clockwise by pressing the reverse button. For older fans, look for a toggle-switch underneath the blades. Move vertical and horizontal switches upwards or to the right, respectively, to push heat down and create upward airflow.

Buy a humidifier or space heater

Since humid air is warmer than dry air, a humidifier can help with added warmth this winter. Another trick? Leave your bathroom door open while showering so the steam can infiltrate the rest of your rental. Additionally, you can purchase a space heater to use next to your bed or entertaining space on an as-needed basis. Just be aware that your electrical costs may rise due to an increase in power usage. Limit your space heater usage for entertaining, as cozying up with a blanket or footie pajamas isn’t always appropriate in front of company. Plus, your guests will welcome a little extra comfort when visiting.

Use natural light

Be sure to keep your blinds open on sunny days this winter, as the rays can keep your home warm at absolutely no cost to you. East-facing apartments should have blinds or curtains open in the morning, and west-facing units benefit from clear windows during the evening while the sun sets.

Don’t break the budget by tampering with your thermostat all winter-long. While some heat is still required for extra chilly climates, lessees can limit their usage with the aforementioned tricks.
