Creativity and tattooing are two things that go hand and hand. Now the billion dollar business has another reason for many to consider getting new ink with a growing trend dubbed as “blackout tattoos.”
According to BuzzFeed, the idea of blackout tattoos amplified over the years with the help of tattoo artist Chester Lee from Singapore. Head of Oracle Tattoos, the 29-year-old has created hundreds of tattoos that have covered up regretful portraits and created new, profound ones with large black shading.
The spin on the old artform is also inspired by neo-tribal tattoos with hints of the popular white-ink designs. Sessions vary from six to 20 hours depending on the location of the tat. Larger tattoos such as the blackout ones bring more of a risk of scarring and possible infection.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, Dr. Eric Schweiger of Schweiger Dermatology Group, says the healing process is delayed with the larger designs. “Fifty percent of melanoma come from a pre-existing mole, which is why it’s important to ask the tattoo artist not to cover up any moles,” Schweiger said. “It’s also essential to get a skin cancer screening from a dermatologist every year to check your skin carefully for any signs of skin cancer.”
Regardless of the dangers, blackout tattoos are continuing to make its way to mainstream tattooing.
