Job Description:
The State of Alaska Department of Labor, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation is recruting for a Vocational Rehabilitation Assistant I/II.
The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), Debarr Counseling & Evaluation Center Anchorage, is recruiting for a capable, active, self-starting individual to provide paraprofessional administrative and technical support to counselors and evaluators by performing routine, on-going assignments which focus on carrying out substantive technical aspects of vocational rehabilitation services to individuals with disabilities. The successful applicant for this position will be organized, resourceful and able to perform duties within an established framework. Additionally, this person will be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
The Vocational Rehabilitation Assistant (VRA) will be directly involved in assisting clients, including scheduling appointments and conducting in-office meetings. The VRA will solicit information from clients and maintain detailed records. Additionally, they will assist with the purchase of services and equipment for clients. The VRA will be required to maintain current knowledge on a wide variety of vocational rehabilitation services, including employment opportunities, medical resources, training/education opportunities and other rehabilitation-related subjects.
The VRA will become familiar with and adhere to State of Alaska purchasing procedures, will be responsible for initiating purchases of services, supplies and equipment and will ensure that all fiscal requirements are met. The successful applicant will have a work history that clearly demonstrates professional office experience, attention to detail and the ability to meet varying, sometimes overlapping timelines and goals.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Provide excellent customer service
- Conduct group orientations
- Conduct intake interviews
- Schedule appointments for medical evaluations, vocational workshops
- Function as front desk receptionist on a rotating basis which includes logging in mail and faxes, as well as greeting visitors
- Maintain client files, accurately document service progression
- Make purchases, pay bills in case management system
- Provide assistance to counselors to manage caseload budget

The VRA I is the entry level in the class series where the incumbent learns to apply vocational rehabilitation policies and procedures to provide routine services to individuals with disabilities. The VRA II is the journey level in the class series and requires a solid working knowledge of DVR programs and vocational rehabilitation practices and procedures. Incumbents advance from the VRA I to the VRA II by meeting established agency criteria.

Minimum Qualifications:
Vocational Rehabilitation Assistant I:

High school graduation or the equivalent;

AND

One year of experience performing a variety of office clerical assignments of average difficulty or performing specialized complex clerical work. This experience is met by service as an Administrative Clerk II, Accounting Clerk II, or Administrative Clerk III with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

OR

One academic year of education from an accredited college.

Vocational Rehabilitation Assistant II:

One year of entry level experience, learning to provide direct technical and administrative support in the delivery of vocational rehabilitation services. This experience is met by service as a Vocational Rehabilitation Assistant I with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

OR

One academic year of education from an accredited college.
