Coffee lovers are welcoming a new, independent coffee shop by the artisan firm of coffee roasters 200 Degrees to the city centre, situated on Nottingham’s Old Market Square.

The ground floor, part of the old Flying Horse Inn dating back to 1483, has been renovated to reveal period features such as stained glass windows and wood panelling which had previously been hidden behind shop cladding, and is devoted to the 200 Degrees coffee shop, serving a range of specialist coffees, drinks and food.

Barista School

Meanwhile upstairs, the city’s first ever barista school runs dedicated courses and one to one sessions for both the public and trade customers. This learning zone provides professional training to the highest possible level for people working in other coffee shops, but it also gives amateur coffee enthusiasts a thrilling chance to get their hands on commercial machines and learn tips on how to make great coffee with even the cheapest home kits.

Coffee shop, roast house and barista school in one operation

200 Degrees was founded by pals Rob Darby and Tom Vincent, both 41, who met at the University of Nottingham and have more than 20 years experience in the café business behind them. They are joined by Tim Moss, 29, who heads up the roasting operation. They pride themselves on being one of the few companies who combine a coffee shop, roast house and barista school into one operation.

Emma Woodcock manager of the 200 Degrees café said: “We’ve taken on 15 members of staff who have all been trained to a high standard ensuring our quality beans which have been roasted here in Nottingham can be passed on to the customer.”

Adds something unique

Coffee connoisseur Stacy Russell, 28, from Nottingham said: “I’m a huge coffee fan and this place is great, it has a really cool vibe about it and the original features make it cosy and interesting.

“You’d usually find me in one of the big chains, but now 200 Degrees has opened I think I will certainly be coming here more often instead.

“It’s something different to what all the big chains offer and adds something unique to the city.”

The coffee

The 200 Degrees coffee shop offers both their house blend espresso and a changing guest single origin Arabica that have all been freshly roasted in Nottingham at the 200 Degrees roasting house based on Meadow Lane in Nottingham. All their espressos are pulled through the beautiful Victoria Arduino Black Eagle which graces the bar alongside a couple of groundbreaking Mythos One grinders.

Tim Moss said: “We use only high grade Rainforest Alliance beans and roast them ourselves to personally ensure that this quality can be preserved and passed on to the customer.

“This crop to cup approach ensures that quality is maintained throughout the entire process and is something we at 200 Degrees are truly passionate about.”
