The Mill at Elstead has just hosted Christmas, but in May – a belated festive celebration for all the local residents who were due to celebrate last Christmas at The Mill when the pub was completely flooded during the bad weather. It has since been completely renovated and re-opened last month, much to locals’ delight.

The pub’s landlord and lady, Jeff and Georgia Watts, wanted to recreate some festive cheer for those who had booked Christmas Day lunch with them. As well as serving a traditional Christmas lunch with all the trimmings, Santa Claus himself made a special appearance – and brought some snow from the North Pole to make the day even more special!

Total renovation

The Mill at Elstead has re-opened following a total floor to ceiling renovation. The pub was completely flooded when the rivers burst their banks during the Christmas period and was forced to close its doors and wait over three weeks for the waters to subside. Refusing to be defeated, the landlord and lady decided, alongside the team at Fuller’s, to use the opportunity to undergo a total renovation of the 300 year old property.

In just two months, the team has refurbished every aspect of the three storey pub, while preserving its rich heritage and the iconic exterior, which is a Grade II listed building. The mill itself can still be seen turning and visitors can now walk over a glass floor and see the water running underneath the pub. Reclaimed floorboards have been used in several areas and the pub has retained its historic charm throughout.

Just as before, The Mill at Elstead has something for everyone – with a fine dining offering, a casual area with comfy sofas and a riverside beer garden for lazy summer days. The head chef has re-vamped the menu, which contains only the freshest ingredients in delicious home-made dishes. There is also a healthy and delicious kid’s menu which features organic juices and, of course, a great range of drinks on offer including numerous Fuller’s beers.

About The Mill

The Mill’s story dates back to 1647, when the original building burnt down. That same year, the Mill had been occupied by Oliver Cromwell’s roundheads. A new mill was built in 1648 and is belived to have functioned as a corn mill until the late 18th Century. Later, in the 19th Century, it was acquired by the Appleton family – and used for making braid for military uniforms.
