Bibendum Wine Ltd, the leading independent wine merchant, has announced the launch of its first mobile app for iPhone – Plonk. The app has been specifically designed to demystify grape varieties and wine styles and to help people discover something exciting.

The app, which targets those with a growing interest in wine, will help consumers to understand the flavours that they like, suggest similar wines to try, provide interesting insight into the grapes, and even demonstrate how to pronounce each varietal.

Displaying a selection of grape varieties in the style of a periodic table, the app will equip those with even the most basic wine knowledge to pick more exciting wines in supermarkets, restaurants and pubs, without the risk of choosing something away from the styles they know and love.

Michael Saunders, Managing Director at Bibendum Wine Ltd, commented: “At Bibendum we’ve always prided ourselves on innovation, which makes both the trade and the end consumer’s wine experience more interesting. The creation of Plonk follows in a long line of innovation including both our Taste Test, our work with Prospect and profiling consumers flavour preferences, and the Wondering Wine Company – we’re sure that this app will be a huge success and that it will grow people’s interest in the category as well as being an excellent training tool for the trade.”

Whether stuck in a Pinot Grigio rut or wanting to learn more about Muscat, Plonk will help broaden consumers’ wine knowledge, enabling them to discover more unusual grape varieties, such as Gruner Veltliner and Bonarda. The app is the perfect wine buying partner and covers over 70 grape varieties and 25 wine styles across 14 countries around the world.

Available free for 2 months

The Plonk App is available from the App Store on iPhone www.AppStore.com/Plonk. It will be free for the first two months.
