Cleveland State Men’s Tennis | Purdue Invitational
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team had a pair of runner-up finishes at the Purdue Invitational Sunday - Matt Ford and Jorg van der Vloet in the B Doubles Bracket and van der Vloet in the C Consolation Singles Bracket.
"We had some great semifinal performances today from Matt Ford and Jorg in doubles and Jorg in singles, but we just weren't able to pull out the wins in the finals," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "In doubles, Matt Ford and Jorg had a solid win against a Green Bay duo in the semfinals, and it's always good to get a win against a league opponent during fall play. We are playing better and better in doubles every time we step on the court, and now we just need to finish out matches and give ourselves a better chance to win."
In their first match of the day, Ford and van der Vloet picked up an 8-4 win over Leo Gomez-Islinger and Rowan Isaaks of Green Bay in the semifinals, advancing to the championship match. In the championship match the Viking duo faced the Toledo team of Garrett Cona and Stejepan Sisko, falling to the Rockets, 8-6. Ford and van der Vloet ended the weekend with a 4-1 doubles record.
"Jorg was able to get a win over a good Louisville player in his semifinal contest, and came up just short in the finals. He played lights out in the first set, but in the second he looked like he was running on beanbags. He came back in the tiebreaker, but couldn't quite pull it off. I am encouraged to see him playing better tennis right now, and I know that he will be playing at a high-level again soon," Etzkin said.
van der Vloet continued his strong play on the final day of the Purdue Invitational in the C Consolation Singles bracket – picking up a 7-5, 6-3 win over Louisville's Felipe Frias in the semifinals, before falling to Ricky Medinilla of Purdue, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) in the consolation championship match.
"We were also able to pick up some good wins in the Last Hope Draw today, and I was happy to see that we played better tennis as the weekend went on. Today, we had a chance to win every match that we were playing in, and overall I thought we had a strong last day," Etzkin said.
The Vikings went 3-1 in the 'Last Hope Draw' Sunday, with Matt Kuelker, Ali Shabib and Nolan Marks each picking up a victory, while Joe VanMeter came up just short in a tiebreak match.
The Vikings will now take a week off from competition, and will resume the fall season at the Notre Dame Invitational (Friday, October 4 – Sunday, October 6).

Green Bay Men’s Tennis | Purdue Invitational
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – One week after being named MVP at the Western Michigan Invitational, Green Bay sophomore Howard Scott (Exeter, England) advanced all the way to the championship match of the Flight A singles bracket on Sunday at the Purdue Fall Invitational.
Scott won his first four singles matches in the three-day, 20-team meet at the Schwartz Tennis Center, starting with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 win on Friday over DePaul’s Filip Dzanko, who was ranked as one of the top-eight seeds in the 32-man flight. The Phoenix sophomore advanced to the semifinals with two more straight-set wins over Valparaiso’s Dave Bacalla (6-3, 6-1) and No. 2 seed Chris Simich (6-0, 6-2) of Louisville.
Scott earned his trip to the title match with a 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-1 victory over Toledo’s Mark Singni before falling to the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed Nadin Indre of Western Michigan 6-1, 6-2.
Fellow sophomore Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) also had a strong tournament for the Phoenix, advancing to the semifinals of the Flight B singles bracket. Gomez Islinger knocked off Butler’s Billy Weldon 6-0, 6-2 in his opening match before beating IPFW’s Jonathan Raa 6-1, 6-4 in his second contest. The sophomore took down top-seeded Michael Lippens of Louisville 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to move on to the semis where he fell to second-seeded Mateus Silva of Purdue 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Two Green Bay doubles duos made deep runs in the Flight B doubles bracket, as Gomez Islinger and Rowan Isaaks (London, England) and Scott and Marius Merz (Heidelberg, Germany) both advanced to the semifinals. The teams were a win away from an all-Green Bay title match, but Gomez Islinger and Isaaks fell to Cleveland State’s Jorg van der Vloet and Matt Ford 8-4 and Scott and Merz dropped an 8-1 decision to Toledo’s Garrett Cona and Stjepan Sisko.
The Phoenix won a total of eight singles and seven doubles contests in the main draws over the three days.
Green Bay continues its fall slate next weekend at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
UIC Men’s Tennis | SIUE Invitational
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The UIC men's tennis team traveled to Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville this past weekend to compete in the SIUE Invitational. The Flames faced off in a round robin style tournament against teams from SIUE, St. Louis, Western Illinois, and Eastern Illinois.
"We had a good overall team effort," said head coach Hans Heufeld. "Isaac Lloveras went undefeated in singles and the duo of Maurizio Feoli and Carl Hedstrom were relentless in their doubles play.
Lloveras was completely flawless through all four singles matches this weekend. The redshirt sophomore defeated Nishaad Balachandran from Saint Louis 6-1, 6-4. He then faced SIUE's Nico Kuehn winning 6-1, 6-5 (7-3). Lloveras breezed past WIU's Max Cederkall 6-3, 6-1, and EIU's Rui Silva 6-3, 0-6, 10-5 to close out singles competition.
The Flames Eric Pontow started singles competition in the second round against SIUE's Stephen Washuta, beating him 6-1, 6-2. Pontow continued strong facing WIU's Brett Furmanski 6-1, 6-0. In the third match, he finished unbeaten through singles play after facing EIU's Volodymy Zverkovsky 6-1, 6-2.
UIC's Feoli started singles competition strong winning three straight, beating Luis Miguel Flores from SLU 6-1, 6-3, SIUE's Jacob Tanulanond 6-5 (7-5), 5-6 (5-7), 10-8, and Chris Bunch from Western Illinois 7-5, 6-2. In his final match, Feoli fell short to EIU's Kevin Bauman 6-3, 2-6, 10-6.
Hedstrom entered singles competition falling short to SLU's Vuk Poledica 6-4, 6-4. Hedstrom won the next three against SIUE's Patrick Gaffigan 6-2, 6-2, Brandon Meeker from WIU 6-0, 6-1, and finally EIU's Grant Thompson 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 10-6.
UIC's Alexander Raa went through singles competition with a 2-1 record. Raa began by falling short to SLU's Yehia El Sallaly 6-3, 6-4. He defeated his final two opponents, WIU's Mitch Granger 6-5 (5-7), 6-3, 10-6 and Robert Skolik from EIU 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 to close out his singles play.
James Li fell short to SLU's Patrick Kella 3-6, 6-4, 10-5. Li then defeated Jacob Perkins from SIUE 5-6 (5-7), 6-3, 10-7. Li continued on his hot streak overpowering WIU's Christoph Haertel 6-4, 0-6, 12-10. In his final match of singles play, Li took on Moritz Kandt from EIU, but was beaten by Kandt 7-6 (7-4) 6-2.
The Flames Alan Reifer battled through four matches in singles competition being defeated by SLU's Joe Flanagan 6-4, 6-5 (7-3), SIUE's Matthew Hutchinson 6-3, 6-5 (7-3), WIU's Ben Yue 6-1, 6-3, and EIU's Ryan Henderson 6-2, 6-3.
Feoli and Hedstrom joined together to breeze undefeated throughout doubles play. The duo competed against Nico Kuehn and Jacob Perkins from SIUE (8-1), Grant Thompson and Moritz Kandt from EIU (8-3) and WIU's Chris Bunch and Max Cederkall (8-1).
The Flames Raa and Reifer teamed up to go 2-1 in doubles play. The pair began by facing Stephen Washuta and Jacob Tanulanond from SIUE, winning 8-5. Next, they faced Kevin Bauman and Robert Skolik from EIU winning 8-5. The tandem was defeated in their last doubles match against WIU's Christoph Haertel and Ben Yue, 8-3.
UIC's Lloveras and Pontow were paired together through doubles play this weekend. The twosome was defeated by SIUE's Patrick Gaffigan and Matthew Hutchinson 8-4 in the first match. Lloveras and Pontow then faced EIU's Ryan Henderson and Rui Silva, winning 13-11. They closed out doubles play ultimately falling short to WIU's Mitch Granger and Brandon Meeker 8-6.
The Flames finished the weekend against SLU 2-4 in singles play, WIU 6-1 in singles and 1-2 in doubles, SIUE 5-1 in singles and 2-1 in doubles, and EIU 4-3 in singles and 3-0 in doubles.
UIC resumes fall competition on Thurs., Oct. 17, when they head to Columbus, Ohio, to compete in the ITA Midwest Regionals.

Valparaiso Men’s Tennis | Purdue Invitational
The Purdue Invitational concluded Sunday afternoon but not before Brian Hickey (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) earned a consolation championship in the Flight E draw. The sophomore cruised into the finals with a 6-3. 6-1 victory over Wright State's Myles Harris in the morning. The win set up a date in the finals with IUPUI's Rudy Frazier. Hickey took an early lead over Frazier and didn't look back as he won in straight sets 6-4. 6-3. Hickey improved his singles record to 3-1 with Sunday's wins.
Sophomore Lucas Waak (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) lost his Flight E Championship match 6-4. 6-2 to Marquette's Kristian Trukov. Waak had downed University of Chicago's Krish Ravella in Saturday's second round before earning a spot in the finals with an injury defeat over Case Western Reserve's James Fojtasek.
The only other match of the day for the Crusaders was Michael Savaglio's (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) semifinal tilt against Marquette's Nick Dykema in the Flight D draw. Dykema got past Savaglio 6-2, 6-3 in the morning match.
Overall, the Crusaders walked away with 18 total victories in the Purdue Invitational, a vast improvement over last year's total of two.
They welcome five teams to the Valparaiso Fall Invitational Friday, the first of the two-day event. The first match begins at 9:00 am at the Valpo Tennis Complex.
Cleveland State Women’s Tennis | Ball State Fall Invitational
MUNCIE, Ind. – The freshmen duo of Princess Gbadamosi and Victoria Bensimon finished as the runner-up in the A Doubles Bracket Sunday, leading the Cleveland State women's tennis team at the Ball State Fall Invitational.
"We lost a tough match in the finals of the doubles draw today, Princess and Victoria really played solid tennis throughout the match, making it closer than what the score indicated," assistant coach Frank Polito said. "Overall I think the team played really well all weekend, and I'm looking forward to what they can do next weekend at the Michigan State Invite."
After going 3-0 over the past two days, Gbadamosi and Bensimon earned a spot in the championship match of the A Doubles Bracket against Arkansas State's Janie Nowland and Tamara Slijepcevic. Despite a hard-fought match, the Viking duo fell to Arkansas State, 8-2 in the final contest.
The Vikings will now have one more fall tournament before the ITA Midwest Regional, competing at the Michigan State Invitational next weekend (Friday, Sept. 27 – Sunday, Sept. 29).

Youngstown State Men's Tennis | USTA Billie Jean King Men's College Invitational
Flushing, N.Y. - Youngstown State's Sebastian Hagn and Max Schmerin each won singles flights in action over the weekend at the USTA Billie Jean King Men's College Invitational held at USTA National Tennis Center.
Hagn won the Singles B Flight winning four matches in straight sets while Schmerin won the Singles E Flight, rallying in the championship match after dropping the first set to knock off Marist's Matteo Guidici.
Schmerin and Victor Theorin won the title in the No. 3 Doubles Flight. At No. 2 doubles, Zeeshan Ismail and Silviu Mistreanu opened up with two wins before falling in the semifinals.
Head Coach Mickael Sopel said he was impressed with the way the Penguins competed. Marist and Fairleight Dickinson both advanced to the NCAA Championships last year.
"Sebastian just played great tennis throughout the weekend," Sopel said. "He was able to stay focused all weekend and maintain a very high level of tennis to win the B flight against a very solid FDU player."
"Max really impressed me this weekend. In his single final against Marist, Max was able to elevate his level throughout the match and dig into his energy reserves to clinch that final third set. I am really excited for him and for the rest of the season."
Ismail won three singles matches at Flight C, Mistreanu won two in Flight A action, Dawoud Kabli won twice in Flight D and Theorin split his two matches at Flight E.
The Penguins return to action on Oct. 22 when they compete at the ITA Midwest Regionals.

Detroit Women's Tennis | Bowling Green Invitational
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (9/21/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team battled some tough opponents as well as the weather this weekend, but the Titans were still able to come away with a pair of titles at the Bowling Green Invitational.
The event started on Friday and concluded on Saturday with matches played at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus, Bowling Green High School and the Perrysburg Tennis Center. The six-team field included host Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Duquesne, IPFW and Toledo.
The championships were brought home by the No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Nino Sujashvili and Irina Slizovskaya and the No. 3 tandem of seniors Raina Halabi and Elena Strakhova.
At top doubles, Sujashvili and Slizovskaya started the competition with a convincing 8-2 win over BGSU's Nikki Chiricosta and Drew Fillis, and followed that with an 8-6 tally over Toledo's Pia Rygh and Emily Mazzola. In the championship match, the Titans were able to get in rhythm and down Duquesne's Sarah Shashura and Spencer Caravaggio, 8-5.
In the third doubles flight, Halabi and Strakhova moved past Toledo's Kayleigh Hall and Bianca Avram, 8-3, and then defeated a mixed doubles team from BGSU and IPFW (Plaszewski/Sorokina), 8-2. Once again, the red, white and blue didn't hold back dispatching Cincinnati's Sierra Sullivan and Katya Bure, 8-4, for the title.
Detroit almost made it a clean sweep in doubles play as senior Julia Fernandes and sophomore Valery Kulikovskaya were able to win their first match in the second flight, 8-7 (3), over IPFW's Carlota Trevino and Ella Norgren, but their quest for a crown ended in the quarterfinals. The pair then rebounded to upend the Falcons' Hannah Drayton and Katie Brozovich, 8-6, for third place.
In singles, the Titans were able to come away with three wins in the event. Strakhova was the highest finisher taking fourth at flight five with a 1-2 record. She opened her singles portion with 7-6 (4), 6-3, victory over Duquesne's Alrissa Tobe before losing a tough 7-5, 6-1 match in the quarterfinals and a 7-6 (3), 6-3, affair for third place.
Meanwhile in the consolation bracket, Fernandes was able to pick up a win at third singles with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Bianca Avram of Toledo, while at the top flight, Slizovskaya downed the Dukes' Judy Li, 7-5, 6-2.
The Titans will continue the fall tournament season next week as Detroit competes in Wright State's Raider Shootout from Friday-Sunday, Sept. 27-29.
Green Bay Women’s Tennis | Cougar Fall Invitational
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Boasting the youngest roster in the Horizon League, the Green Bay women’s tennis team opened the fall portion of its 2013-14 season eager to learn and gain experience at the Cougar Fall Invite hosted by Chicago State over the weekend.
“The scores were deceiving—across the line up our players showed that they can string together points and are willing to play brave and change up tactics when losing,” Green Bay head coach Sara Schubring said. “Footwork has greatest potential for improvement and will eliminate many of the timing errors seen in our singles play this weekend.”
Sophomore Stephanie Londre (Burlington, Wis.) advanced to the quarterfinal round of the green singles bracket after picking up a 6-3, 6-3 victory over South Dakota’s Dragana Brankovic, but was bested by Lewis’s No. 1 seed Zsofia Lanstiak, 6-0, 6-1.
Freshman Noel Peck (Green Bay, Wis.) also found success in the opening round, defeating Bradley’s Monqiue Graf 6-2, 6-2 to advance in the grey singles bracket. Eventual bracket runner-up Kendra Mills of Lewis ended Peck’s run 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinal round.
Green Bay will return to action on Sept. 27 at the UNI Fall Invite in Waterloo, Iowa.
Milwaukee Women’s Tennis | Gopher Invitational
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Freshman Alysa Straub won her singles match Sunday to claim fifth place in the Gopher Flight as the Gopher Invitational wrapped up.
Straub was UWM's best individual finisher with the win, which came in straight-sets over Caroline Andersen of Iowa State.
Chelsea Bailey wound up sixth in the Maroon Flight after falling in her lone match Sunday, suffering a 6-3, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Franziska Koehler of Gonzaga.
Meanwhile, Straub and Hayley Marshall finished 10th in the Maroon Doubles Flight after a hard-fought 9-7 loss to a duo from Eastern Michigan.
Dana Shannon and Aerielle Pendleton had wrapped up the championship of the Gopher Doubles Flight yesterday.
UWM's fall schedule continues next week at the Northern Iowa Invitational.
Valparaiso Women's Tennis | Ball State Invitational
The Valparaiso women’s tennis team opened its 2013 fall schedule at the Ball State Invitational on Friday. The Invitational was held at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. Twelve schools, including Valparaiso, sent participants to the invitational. Arkansas State, Butler, Chicago State, Cleveland State, Eastern Kentucky, Illinois State, IUPUI, Miami (Ohio) University, Notre Dame, and Wright State all had participants at the event.
Kristin Zakiewicz (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) saw action in the singles A flight for the Crusaders. Zakiewicz fell 6-0, 6-0 to Courtney Wild of Ball State and 6-4, 6-2 to Kirsa Utech of Chicago State.
Paige Heuer and Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain) competed for Valpo in the C flight. In three matches each, Heuer and Hamel were unable to take a match. In Hamel’s second match, she was able to force the first set 7-6(2) but was unable to take the match.
In the D flight, Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph’s) and Megan Barthels (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) saw actionfor the Crusaders. Neither competitor was able to take a match, however. In the E Flight, Morgan Paras and Angelina Goheen (Aurora, Ill./Rosary)represented the Crusaders.
Paras was able to win her first match against Erin Kanii of Ball State 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. Aubree Zdanovec (Appleton, Wis./East) played in the round robin tournament for the Crusaders.
In the A flight of the doubles competition, Hamel/Heuer and Zakiewicz/Fredlake took the court for Valpo. Neither duo was able to take a match. Hamel/Heuer were defeat 8-1 by Nowland/Slijepcevic of Arkansas State, and 8-1 to Cloern/Turner of Wright State. Zakiewicz/Fredlake would lose their matchup to Thurman//Raymond of Miami (Ohio) 8-1.
The double B flight saw pairings of Zdanovec/Paras and Barthels/Goheen. Neither pairing was able to take a match. Barthels/Goheen were, however, able to take Mountford/Roberts of Notre Dame to the limit, but would eventually fall 8-6.
The Crusader women are back in action this Monday, as the team welcomes Robert Morris (Ill.) to the Valpo Tennis Complex. Play is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
Wright State Women's Tennis | Ball State Invitational
The Wright State women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Ball State Invitational on Sunday.
Megan Brdicka fell in the finals of Flight E singles to Chloe Heerden of Miami 6-0, 6-1.
Wright State hosts the Raider Shootout at Thomas Cloud Park and at the WSU Courts September 27-29.
