Halloween Calendar: Family Fun, Ghost Tours, Haunted Attractions

Dole Plantation is usually a bright and sunny place surrounded by the lively greenery of pineapple crowns and its gigantic hedge maze. But this month, things have taken a much darker turn.
The Wahiawa site is now host to not one, but three heart-pounding Halloween attractions at “Nightmare at Dole Plantation,” presented by Nightmares Live Haunted Attraction.
It’s the first time Dole Plantation has had a Halloween attraction on this scale. (In 2011, Dole offered a small haunted maze as a fundraiser for local schools.)
“Nightmare at Dole Plantation” is the largest among five haunted attractions around Oahu this year. Find a complete list of Halloween events and attractions below.
NIGHTMARES LIVE staged its inaugural Halloween haunt in a Kakaako warehouse in 2010 before scaring up screams at Dole Cannery the past two years. Now the company has a much larger canvas to create more terror-filled experiences at the Plantation.
“It’s something we’ve always dreamed of doing,” Nightmares Live President Kristine Wada said of what she described as a “scare park.”
Last year Nightmares Live worked its haunt with just 20 employees. But with the huge expansion at Dole Plantation, Wada said her company has tripled its workforce — a group she says is extremely dedicated to making these attractions truly terrifying.
“They are all so passionate about what they do,” she said. “The actors are what make it a really great haunt. They’re the ones who really bring (the characters) to life.”
Only the brave should enter “13,” a haunted house featuring 13 unlucky plantation curses. The 4,500-square-foot house was built by Nightmares Live specially for this event.
“It’s going to be our traditional haunt that we’ve been doing since we’ve been open,” said Wada. “It’s a walk-through maze. We have our themed rooms. You can see anything in there from clowns to zombies.”
The other two spine-chilling attractions will seem familiar to past visitors to the plantation. Dole’s family-favorite Pineapple Express train transforms into the “Nightmare Express,” taking those who dare to step aboard on a 20-minute journey through the dark pineapple fields that includes ghost stories and a few surprises. And you never know what’s around the corner on the “Trail of Terror,” which is the frightening reincarnation of the plantation’s signature pineapple-shaped maze, utilizing about a quarter of the 3.15 acres of hedge.
During the day, the train and maze revert back to their original states as child-friendly attractions.
