Storytelling Guild

Join adult storytellers to share traditional and personal tales and trade tips on storytelling techniques. The Rye Storytellers’ Guild meets at the Rye Free Reading Room one Tuesday evening a month at 6 p.m. Each meeting is loosely arranged around a theme. At the meeting on Sept. 9, the topic will be “Harvest Moon.” Listeners, as well as tellers, are always welcome.

Write your life story

The Rye Free Reading Room invites you to write your life story. Either for yourself, or as a legacy for your children or grandchildren, recording your life story can have many positive effects.

In the first of two workshops, published author Carol Costa will lead participants gently and safely down the path of yesterday. The dates are as follows:

On, Saturday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m.

On, Saturday, Sept. 27

It will focus how to structure your memoir and employ the skills you’ll need to pull your story together.

Forever Families Through Adoption

On Monday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., offers a free workshop for anyone interested in or involved in the adoption process. This includes  professionals, community members, expectant parents, adoptive or prospective adoptive parents and adoptees.

Irving Harper: A Mid-Century

Mind At Play

Opening reception Sunday, Sept. 14, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Curated by Katharine Dufault and Jeff Taylor, this solo retrospective debuts the private works of design genius Irving Harper, who is known professionally for his iconic contributions to the George Nelson Office, including the 1959 Ball Clock, Herman Miller logo and 1956 marshmallow sofa. Harper’s personal creations have never before been shared publicly. Don’t miss this tour de force exhibition of whimsical paper sculptures in the Rye Arts Center Gallery on Sept. 14 through Oct. 8, 2014. This exhibit is made possible by Herman Miller and Maharam.

Poetry sought for Marshlands exhibit

All poetry and verse that was inspired by Marshlands Conservancy or created at the preserve can be submitted for entry on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 6 and 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the conservancy in Rye.

All submissions must be framed and ready for hanging. There is a maximum of three submissions per person. All age groups are welcome.

The exhibit, titled “Marshlands in Poetry,” will open Sunday, Sept. 14, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., with a reception for the artists and public. It will remain on view weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through the end

of March.

The reception is sponsored by the Friends of Marshlands Conservancy.

Marshlands Conservancy is a Westchester County Park, and is located on Route 1 Boston Post Road in Rye, just south of the Rye Golf Club.

Free food from Chipotle and Longfords for all teens

Inviting all teens grades 9 through 12 to a fun evening of basketball, volleyball, DJ music and free food from Chipotle and Longfords at the Resurrection Middle School Gym on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at 946 Boston Post Road in Rye. The event is non-denominational, open to all teens in the area with the goal of building community and fellowship. Fall registration at the Rye Y

Registration for fall programs is underway. The new program guide, available online or at the Y, is filled with dozens of offerings for families, youth and adults.

Super Swimming Stars

Super Swimming Stars is a unique program created exclusively for children ages 3 to 17 with physical and developmental disabilities.

Jellyfish swim class

Jellyfish swim class is a new option for children ages 28 months to 3 years old. Middle school age youth are invited to the new Second Saturday program–a fun evening each month of camaraderie, activities and games.

Family programs

Families with children ages 3 to 5 years old can enjoy exercising with the Family Fit-Nastics class.

The new Mommy & Me Stroller class is a creative workout for moms with babies in strollers.

The Centennial Scavenger Hunt is an afternoon of fun with a team of friends or family held on Sept. 21.

New members, ages 12 and above can purchase a three-pack of personal training sessions for a reduced fee.

Rye Specialty Camp programs

Rye Youth Soccer

The Rye Youth Soccer summer camp will be held by Rich Savage, Jared Small and several other nationally licensed coaches. Highlights of the camp include innovative and engaging skills instruction, skills contests, nightly World Cup tournament play and giveaways including t-shirts and other prizes. Space is limited. Mud run fun for adults and families

Join the training program for the Oct. 5 Merrell Down and Dirty Obstacle Race in Orchard Beach. Training will take place June through September, one evening and one Saturday morning per month. Ages 4 to adult.

Helping Hands for the homeless and hungry

The Homeless and Hungry, a nonprofit organization, prepares fresh, bagged lunches at Rye Presbyterian Church on the third Thursday of each month. The wrapped sandwiches are brought to the Grace Church Community Center in White Plains and distributed with a piece of fruit and juice or drink.

Helping Hands buys the provisions with funds raised from our wonderful donors. Helping Hands purchases and donates food, clothing, school supplies and makes cash grants to organizations for distribution to those in need. For more than 25 years, Helping Hands has partnered with dozens of social service agencies and churches who are on the front line providing for the basic needs of its neighbors.

Fall migrants bird walk

Warblers, hawks and other birds have started to head south. Take a leisurely walk around the preserve searching for them on Saturday, Sept. 13 in Lenoir preserve at 8 a.m., 19 Dudley St. in Yonkers 968-5851.

Wainwright House fall class guide

Wainwright House fall class guide is now available.  The full color guide can be viewed at wainwright.org. Over 60 classes and workshops in creativity, spiritual exploration, health, well-being, the environment, yoga and movement. New this year is the yoga teacher certification Academy, and certification in animal reiki and hypnosis.

Join on Sept. 14,  for the health and well-being expo. Everything you may want to know about holistic practices. This is an interactive day from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

52 holistic sessions are 35 minutes each for a $5 signup fee for four. Greg O’Brien as heard on CBS News will be the keynote speaker on “Early onset Alzheimer’s. Westchester County Blood Drive

Westchester County will once again hold a Marylou Seaman Employee Blood Drive in partnership with the New York Blood Center as part of its Sept. 11 observance.

The drive which is open to the public, will take place Thursday, Sept. 11, at the County Center, 198 Central Park Ave. in White Plains. It will be going on from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Anyone between the ages of 16 and 75 and who weigh at least 110 pounds is a potential  donor. Individuals who are interested in donating blood and are over the age of 75, must have a recent doctor’s note in order to donate.
