Writing the story of your life
Do you have stories that need to be told? Learn how to write the story of your life in a workshop led by published author Carol Costa on Saturday, June 7, from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Whether for yourself or as a legacy for your children or grandchildren, recording your life story can have many positive effects.
Costa promises to lead participants gently and safely down the path of yesterday using proven techniques that help recall the highlights of your life.
Bring a notebook, writing implements and gel pens or colored pencils if you wish to add artistic flourishes.

“Fleeting Moments/Captured Images” is the title of the new show of photography by Alan Model on exhibit at the Rye Free Reading Room from June 4 through 28.
An opening reception will be held on Saturday, June 7, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. when all are invited to view the show and meet the photographer. Model, who is a resident of Rye, says, “My exhibit includes images that I have recorded over a period of 40 years. While they were taken in many parts of the world, their locations are not of any great significance to me. I enjoy capturing unexpected moments. In a sense my subjects come to me rather than by my looking for them.”

Training will take place June through September, one evening and one Saturday morning per month.

Adventure park ropes course
Ages 12 and up
Tuesday, May 27, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Program site: Discovery Museum, Bridgeport, Conn.
Fee: $70 residents only
Enjoy an awesome day with Rye Recreation. We will be taking the Rye Recreation bus to the Adventure Park at the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport, Conn. Participants will get to spend the day climbing on several different rope courses of various levels. Rye Recreation will provide chaperones, transportation and a pizza lunch. Bus leaves Rye Recreation at 9 a.m. sharp and returns at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Rye Memorial Day Parade
Monday, May 26, beginning at 9:30 a.m. from Station Plaza, continuing on to Purchase Street and ending at the village green.
There will be Memorial Day services on green starting at 10:30 a.m., as well as music, marchers, flags, antique cars.
Rye Historical Society joins Memorial Day celebration
On Monday, May 26, members of the Rye Historical Society’s Board of Trustees will march with a banner in the Memorial Day Parade, sponsored by Rye American Legion Post and Ladies Auxiliary.
The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. from Station Plaza and proceeds on Purchase Street to the village green where Memorial Day services begin at 10:30 a.m.
Rye Historical Society’s director Sheri Jordan is the keynote speaker at the ceremony to commemorate all those who have served and sacrificed to protect our country. Festivities to celebrate the day include marchers, flags waving, antique cars and music courtesy of Patriot Brass Ensemble playing in the parade. Sponsored by the Rye Historical Society, the ensemble raises funds to support their free concerts given in Veterans Affairs hospitals around the country.
The public is invited to visit the Square House Museum to view its Rye in World War II exhibit, which will close after Memorial Day. This exhibit has garnered acclaim from local and out of town visitors who have been moved by the array of personal family mementos and historic artifacts on display.
The Rye Historical Society is located at 1 Purchase Street in Rye.

Architects to speak on disaster preparedness at Rye Meeting House
On Saturday, May 31, at 4 p.m., architects Walter Sedovic and Jill Gotthelf will present a lecture, “Disaster Preparedness and Response for Shoreline Buildings.”
The talk will cover what can be done to prepare buildings for an extreme weather event in order to minimize damage. The architects will impart important information for anyone living in a shoreline community such as Rye. They will share specific ideas that can be put to use.
The program is part of the Bird Homestead nonprofit’s lecture series, “After the Storm: Toward a More Resilient Shoreline.” The series is supported, in part, by a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Sedovic and Gotthelf, are the architects for the restoration of the Meeting House and many notable landmarks throughout the Northeast. Admission is free, donations are gratefully accepted.
