New Rochelle stories, past and present, will complement 325th exhibit
“New Rochelle: A Celebration of 325 Years, 1688-2013,” a stunning timeline exhibit that charts milestones in the city’s history with text and archival photographs from the New Rochelle Public Library’s local history collection, will be on display at the library from Nov. 29 through Dec. 4, 2013. First displayed in City Hall in April, the exhibit has a new sound component, which allows visitors to hear the “voices” of prominent individuals who wrote about New Rochelle in diaries and autobiographies, as re-enacted by talented New Rochelle High School students and adult actors, and snippets from the library’s extensive oral history collection. The exhibit is on view in the library’s Lumen Winter Gallery during regular library hours.
New Rochelle Public Library is is enhancing, preserving and expanding access to its existing oral history collections. Dozens of interviews recorded on audio cassettes, beginning with an oral history project initiated during New Rochelle’s 300th anniversary, are being digitized, indexed and edited for new listening opportunities. The invaluable stories about our heritage, as well as stories recorded in The Cube, will be shared via social media, various web portals, and a Sound and Story campaign, “A Year of Sounds and Stories: 365 Tales from Unexpected Places,” which will be launched in 2014.
New Rochelle Art Association exhibit and jurying-in of new members
The annual Adolph Grant Award Show sponsored by the New Rochelle Art Association will be featured in the Lumen Winter Gallery of the New Rochelle Public Library from Dec. 8, after noon, to Jan, 2, 2014.
The show is open to all exhibiting members of the Association with the grand prize of $75 reserved for a New Rochelle resident working in oils, watercolors, acrylics or pastels. This award was established by the New Rochelle Art Association in 1924 in memory of noted member Adolph Grant, and has been awarded annually to an outstanding New Rochelle painter ever since. Another cash award will be given for Best in Show, as well as ribbons for second, third and honorable mention for outstanding entries in all media and categories, regardless of the artist’s residence.
Artists who would like to become members of the New Rochelle Art Association are invited to submit three pieces of recent work not older than two years for consideration for membership at the Jurying-In of New Members on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the New Rochelle Public Library. All types of work will be considered–paintings, graphics, sculpture or crafts–as long as it is an original and not a copy. Photography and computer graphics will also be considered. Work should be brought to the meeting room on the first floor of the library. Artists selected by the jury will become exhibiting members of the New Rochelle Art Association.
Young artists concert at the library
The public is invited to hear some of Westchester’s most accomplished rising musicians as they compete in the 51st annual Westchester Musicians Guild’s Young Artists Concert on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at 2 p.m., in the Ossie Davis Theater of the New Rochelle Public Library. Top student musicians in grades 7 through 12 will perform a variety of riveting works. The concert is free; donations gratefully accepted.
The Westchester Musicians Guild was founded in 1938 for the purpose of encouraging and upholding the highest standards of music teaching and performance. The WMG promotes goodwill and fellowship among professional musicians and music devotees in our community by sponsoring a variety of formal and informal events, including professional chamber music concerts, informal play-ins, and a winter concert and party. The WMG supports the advancement of young musicians through student recitals, the WMG Young Artists Concert, and scholarship awards.
Thanksgiving celebration
A community Thanksgiving service and reception under the auspices of The Interreligious Council of New Rochelle will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday Nov. 28 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Trinity St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 311 Huguenot St., New Rochelle. Clergy and youth of all faiths will be participating in the service. Paul Warhit, president of The Westchester Jewish Council and president of The American Jewish Historical Society, will be the guest speaker. Refreshments following the service. All are welcome! Westchester Italian Cultural Center events
Exhibit: Presepio Napoletano
Nativity scenes are very popular in Italy and are generally found in every household during the holiday season. The nativity originated in Italy in the 13th century when St. Francis of Assisi asked Giovanni Vellita from the Village of Greccio to create a manger scene. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the nativity was turned into an art form in Naples and included representation of daily life in Naples at that time. Today, many artisans are dedicated to the craft of creating handmade figures for presepi. Presepio Napoletano represents our rich cultural and spiritual traditions. It portrays a bustling village located at the base of Mount Vesuvius. The landscape is handcrafted in wood, cork and paper mache. The figures are made of terra cotta, hemp and wire, many of which stand more than a foot tall.

Exhibit opening: Italy’s holiday traditions
Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. Join us and noted food historian, Francine Segan, for a lively presentation on the many splendors of Christmas and New Year in Italy in occasion of the opening of the exhibit, Presepio Napoletano.
The festivals, special foods and spectacular customs of the holiday season last a glorious three weeks in Italy. Discover the special foods, wines, and traditions of the holidays. Take a behind-the-scenes peek at the Neapolitan artisans who, for centuries, have hand-crafted wooden crèche. Learn about the many living Nativity scenes popular throughout Italy and discover the numerous artisanal food makers and the stories behind the country’s traditional holiday meals. After the talk, enjoy an assortment of chocolates by Italy’s renowned chocolate maker Perugina.
