“Taking Time for Reflection” art exhibit
The Harrison Council for the Arts presents “Taking Time for Reflection,” paintings in Parks by Hilda Green Demsky at the Harrison Public Library, Bruce Ave., June 4 to 27.
Demsky began her professional life as a visual artist with a BFA in painting from Carnegie Mellon University. Three artists she studied with who strongly influenced her art were Josef Albers, Tony Smith and George Sugarman. Demsky has been painting “en plein air” in and around Westchester County parks. There are paintings from the Sheldrake Environmental Center and Memorial Park in Larchmont, the serpentine walk at the New Dawn Foundation, Hudson Beach and the reservoir in New Rochelle, Wampus Pond Park in Armonk and Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River.
Demsky is inspired by the open natural surroundings of our local and county parks. Her primary reason for painting is to express feelings related to nature, to ecological concerns, and to celebrate life.
Demsky has been the recipient of numerous awards, fellowships and residencies, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship to paint in Italy. Some career highlights were an invitational exhibition in Greece focusing on pollution and the marine environment, an exhibition and presentation of her environmental art at the World Fulbright Conference in Budapest and the exhibition of her waterfall paintings at the Galeria Nacional in Costa Rica.
As a member of the International Association of Astronomical Artists, Demsky visited and painted in a satellite factory in England, at Stonehenge and at Yellowstone National Park. She has exhibited extensively in New York, New England, Pennsylvania and Washington. Demsky is a member of the Mamaroneck Artists Guild, Katonah Museum Artists Association, National Association of Women Artists, Pen & Brush Gallery and Pleiades Gallery in New York City.

Manhattanville College now offers professional development
With the establishment of the Manhattanville Education Institute—MEI—the college’s School of Education now offers professional development courses for educators.
The new entity offers approximately 30 courses that mix theory with practice and deals with issues educators face on a regular basis. Classes include topics such as cyberbullying, integrating technology in the classroom and study strategies for school success. All of these are topics specific enough to be talked about in the classroom, but not offered as standalone courses.
All teachers need professional development in order to maintain their certification and MEI offers them a way to do that. Interested educators should seek the approval of the school district they work for prior to registering for MEI courses.
All courses are available to be taken online as well as on campus.

Well, come on down and show us what you’ve got. All we ask is that you keep it clean and appropriate for all audience members. Bring your family and friends; it’s going be fun. Come even if you’re not performing.

Emelin Theater event

On June 27, 2014, The Emelin Theater will present The Michael Jackson Experience starring Delisco James. This unique tribute to Michael Jackson is one inspired fan’s way of giving back to the legacy of his idol as well as introducing The King of Pop’s music to a new generation.
With his incredibly talented band, backup singers and dancers, Delisco James recreates some of Michael Jackson’s most electrifying moments including the days with his brothers in The Jackson Five and his groundbreaking performance of “Billie Jean” on Motown’s 25th Anniversary Special.
The show’s finale, a recreation of the epic video “Thriller” will remind you why Michael will forever be “The King of Pop.”
A lifelong performer, Delisco has starred in three Broadway musicals as well as a national tour playing the role of Judas in “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Headlining the music of Michael Jackson around the globe, he’s played to sold out audiences in Macau, Berlin, Malaysia and Singapore. Delisco has returned home to launch his personal tribute to this musical icon.

The Blue Door Art Gallery in Yonkers is currently seeking submissions for its inaugural issue of the Blue Door Quarterly Journal’a new literary and art publication.
The Journal, which will be available in print and online, will feature work from new and established artists working across various mediums:
• Fiction
• Nonfiction
• Poetry
• Photography
• Fine art
Each issue of the publication will have a different theme. For our inaugural issue, the theme is community
