Persistent Sexual Arousal Syndrome (PSAS) / Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD) / Restless Genital Syndrome (ReGS)

Restless Genital Syndrome is a medical disorder that has mainly been reported in women, but may also affect men.

Women with Restless Genital Syndrome – ReGS have some peculiar sensations at the clitoris, vagina, labia and the region around the vagina, such as on the pubic bone and the groins, and sometimes the anal region. These sensations have previously been called Persistent Sexual Arousal Syndrome (PSAS) and Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD).

The unusual sensations consist of tingling, itching like and wave like sensations, small vibrations or cramps in or around the clitoris and vagina.

Women usually experience a close to orgasm sensation as if they are on the verge on getting an orgasm. These feelings do not cease like in a actual orgasm but lead to an urgent urge to masturbate or to have intercourse in an attempt to get rid of these feelings. While having these sensations, women do not long for or fantasize about sex.

Masturbation or intercourse do not help to reduce the genital feelings, but usually exaggerate the feelings.

The feelings are usually present the whole day, aggravate with sitting down and are often accompanied by restless legs – restless legs syndrome (RLS) and a recurrent urge to void – overactive bladder syndrome (OAB).

Restless genital syndrome makes a woman often completely anxious.

Most affected women do not talk about their complaints because of shy. Avoidance to talk with anybody else about the complaints usually leads to social separation, it means losing of friends, who usually do not understand what is the matter.

Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD) – Causes

The exact causes of PGAD are unclear.

For some women, the condition is triggered by stress and alleviated somewhat when stress is removed.

Some experts believe it may have psychological roots.

Neurological and vascular changes might also cause PGAD.

Some cases may have no known cause at all.

Few common symptoms of PGAD,

A tingling feeling in the clitoris

Genital irritation, throbbing, pressure, or pain

Vaginal contractions

Increased blood flow to the vaginal walls – vaginal congestion

Spontaneous orgasms

For few women, the symptoms may last for a few hours at a time. For others, it can last days or even longer.

Some aspects of PGAD make it different from sexual arousal.

It occurs even when there is no sexual interest.

Orgasm may relieve symptoms for a little while, but it does not make them go away completely.

The symptoms are unwanted and cause the woman distress.

It’s unclear how many women have PGAD.

Many women feel uncomfortable to discuss about this issue with their doctors. Because of this, a woman with PGAD feels anxious and depressed.

Triggering factors of Restless Genital Syndrome

Restless Genital Syndrome may acutely aggravate when the woman gets suddenly frightened, is nervous, gets angry, is anxious, or gets annoyed.

Restless Genital Syndrome may also become aggravated by the use of alcohol or coffee.

The complaints may remain for many weeks or months in order to diminish quite suddenly.

Often there is no clear indication by which one can explain the sudden reoccurrence of the symptoms

Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD) – Treatment

PGAD treatment usually focuses on symptomatic management.

Psychological approaches, such as cognitive behavioural therapy helps for some women.

Psychological counselling helps to learn, how to manage the stress, anxiety, and embarrassment that often accompany PGAD.

There are some physical approaches like ice applied directly to the genitals may numb the area and relieve symptoms.

Physical therapy like pelvic floor exercise is another option.

Symptomatic Homeopathy medicines helps for PGAD,
