Sometimes unprocessed materials like seeds, grains, spices, leaves or flower petals are also used. The base material is usually dry or wet granulated rice or dry flour, to which sindoor (vermilion), haldi (turmeric) and other colors are added. Chemical colors are a modern variation. The rangoli designs can also be in the form of abstract art. Rangoli is a simple two dimensional design. The most common way to make a rangoli is to pinch the thumb and the forefinger and let the color to freely run out from the gap.

Rangoli is a representation of India’s rich heritage. This also reinstates the fact that India is a land of festival and colors. Rangoli is called with different names in various parts of India. In southern part of India it is called as kolam, mandana in Rajasthan, chowkpurana in Northen India, alpana in Bengal, aripana in Bihar and so on and so forth.
