Michigan is associated with a lot of things – Vernor’s Ginger Ale, Ford Motors, the Great Lakes. One great thing that is quickly gaining national attention is our abundance of world-class golf courses. Making the top ten list in multiple golf magazines for the best states to play golf in, Michigan golf courses are finally being recognized as the destination courses they have always been. Living in such a centrally-located city, Lansing residents are right in the center of some of the best golf courses in the United States.

Some of the most well-known golf courses in Michigan are within a few hours driving distance of Lansing, including Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course, Tullymore, and Forest Dunes. However, driving three hours to find great golf is unnecessary because of the equally spectacular courses that are right in our backyard. The following golf courses have received awards and recognition that match some of the most popular courses in the country, without the cost or need to travel.

Forest Akers Golf Courses

The two public golf courses located on the Michigan State University’s campus, Forest Akers East and Forest Akers West, are two of the best public courses in Michigan. The courses have received awards from the Golf Range Association of America, Golf Digest, Maximum Golf, and more. With affordable prices, all-weather driving ranges, and superbly designed greens, the Forest Akers Golf Courses are two of Lansing’s best-kept secrets.

Timber Ridge Golf Club

A Championship Golf Course, Timber Ridge Golf Club was designed in 1988 by Jerry Matthews. Since its development Timber Ridge has consistently been described as a favorite course by Lansing residents because of its flowing contours and mature landscape. The excitement of the course comes from its natural barriers and smooth greens, which makes for an enjoyable experience that still presents a challenge to golfers of all skill levels.

Eagle Eye Golf Course

A Chris Lutzke and Pete Dye design, the Eagle Eye Golf Course is less than 9 miles outside of Lansing in Bath, MI. Ranked in the top 20 for golf course venues in Michigan by Golf Digest, Eagle Eye features a contoured link style course with the well-known “Island Green” hole that is situated in the middle of a small man-made lake.

Golf is the kind of sport that anyone can enjoy because it offers something for everyone. The landscaped greens are built in a way that provide a challenge to golfers while still showcasing the beauty of nature within and around the course. Golf is not a contact sport, so socializing between players is easier and more enjoyable. Also, because the game is less strenuous than other sports, it is more accessible to a wider range of people who wish to be active but aren’t interested in physical contact sports.

Lansing just so happens to be set in the middle of some of the best golf courses in the country, and because the secret is not out yet about how great these courses are, we can take advantage of reasonable prices, open availability, and easy access.
