HSA’S MISSION STATEMENT:  “At Holy Savior Academy, we work together as disciples of Christ to respect, inspire, and foster excellence as together we meet the challenges of the 21st century.”

Please contact me at lsilva@holysavioracademy.com any time. I am available Mondays of every week, usually after school,  if you ever need to schedule a conference with me, with specific questions or concerns about your child. I am usually available at the children’s recess time to provide extra help to them (unless I have recess duty or cafeteria duty that day). Mondays after school they are welcome to stay for extra help too. I do need some advance notice for before school and after school conferences on Mondays and after school help on Mondays please.

Daily Homework

1)

See, I, a, like, the, we, and can, is, an, Fall (the season), Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Winter, Spring, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Spring, Summer, go, yellow, red, blue, to, orange,  green, purple, and pink.

Language Arts: Treasures worksheet pgs. 93-94.  This was assigned today and is due back by Thursday.

Math: Progress in Math worksheet pg. 57.  This was assigned today and is due back by Thursday.

** Children should read daily to an adult or older sibling for about 5 minutes or so and increase the time gradually. Reading Logs for Our Adventures in Reading Program can be returned to school when completed.

**Children should practice shoe lace tying and zipping their coats please These are skills we practice in school also.

Homework & Absence Policies for Kindergarten

**Note, if there is ever a mix up, or I cannot get onto this web page due to technical difficulties at school or home, please note that whatever blank assignments are in your child’s Take Home, Bring Back side of their folder, that is the assignment(s) I would like for them to do. As per my Back to School night handout, each child has 2 days to complete homework (if not, it is marked as late), except for Thursdays when homework can be brought back Friday OR Monday. After Monday, then, it is marked late. Most children usually bring Thursday’s homework assignments back completed on Friday so they can enjoy their weekend

**Also, please note, if homework is incomplete, etc. I do send it back home with a “clean” copy and the corrected copy that was handed into me attached.

**Every day before dismissal, Monday-Friday, I explain to the children all their homework assignments and any blank papers in their Take Home, Bring Back side of their folder to avoid their frustration, becoming upset or confused, etc. at after care or home while completing their assignments.

**If your child is absent because of illness, has a doctor’s appointment and comes to school late or leaves early, will be on vacation, etc. yes, he/she is responsible for all classwork missed and all Math & Language Arts homework assigned during their absence. I encourage journal writing and reading while absent.

All classwork missed and homework missed during your child’s absence will be put in their folder in their Take Home, Bring Back side on the day they return to school. It is due back two-three days after it is sent home in their folder. After the third day, I will mark work as late. As per school policy, I cannot send home homework and classwork in advance.

A note or an email (dated and signed by a parent) must be sent to school about planned absences too. This can be done a few days in advance. The dates your child will be absent should be listed and the reason for the absence stated please.

Homework is assigned almost nightly in Kindergarten because I am trying to teach the students responsibility, reinforce class Language Arts and Math lessons, I use it to informally assess the students, and I also am preparing the students for 1st grade.

Also, all homework should be completed in pencil unless otherwise noted. All children should be writing their first and last names on all homework papers, if they can fit it. All homework should be done completely. This is all part of the Kindergarten report card Participation grade too.

Please, if you have ANY questions about any assignments, e-mail me or send a note to me in your child’s folder as soon as you can. Do not worry…this is one reason why I give all the children two days, and not one day, to complete homework assignments.

School & Classroom Rules

This is also briefly in my Back to School Night handout that I went through that night also.

All children in class begin the day with their backpack magnet on the “Happy Board.” This side of the board has a big smiley face and silly pictures of monsters demonstrating positive behaviors with the behavior written underneath i.e. sharing, raising their hand quietly, etc. to remind the children what is expected of them.

If a child misbehaves in class, the hallway, the cafeteria, with a Specials teacher, etc. and/or breaks one of our class rules that are displayed in our classroom i.e. chatting to a classmate excessively, not paying attention and following directions, calling out and/or out of their seat when they have a question, etc. the child receives one warning if I ask them a few times to stop, remind them of the rules, and they do not stop. After three warnings, the child’s magnet is then moved to the “Sad Board,” where I then draw a sad face up top.

If a child is on the “Sad Board” and continues to not follow school and classroom rules, I write a check mark next to their name and I then contact a parent (s) if that is still the case at dismissal. If a child is on the “Sad Board” and improves greatly, I move their magnet back to the “Happy Board.”

All children whose backpacks remain on the Happy Board at dismissal, receive a sticker from me at dismissal and are verbally praised by me and Ms. Scala. Also, children whose names are on the “Sad Board” lose their classroom job, if they have one, for the time being. Please contact me with any ?

What Did You Learn in School Today?

1) Math:  The children learned about number patterns today. Using the Smart Board, they identified the pattern in each row and the number that would come next in the pattern. There will be a Math “Check it Out” at some point next week. More info. to follow soon.

The children also practiced their number sequencing and greater than, less than with different apps on our school’s tablets. They did really well with this!

2) Language Arts: Using the Smart Board, the children created a Christmas tree classroom display about what they will do on Christmas. They wrote very well on smaller lines.

3) Religion: The children began learning about Advent today in our new Religion chapter. They learned that Jesus is the Light of the World and that God gave us his greatest gift.

4) Social Studies: The children learned about workers in a school and different types of workers in a community. We discussed the importance of each of these people and what their job entails.
