International Literacy Day is September 8! This book-based holiday highlights the need to read, and brings literacy learning to the forefront of education. What can you do to celebrate? Try this easy-to-craft kids’ book-making art activity at home or at school.
Materials:
Cardboard (reuse the front and back of a cereal or cracker box)
Hole punch
Yarn
Scissors
Construction paper
Markers
Instructions:
Cut the cardboard and construction paper into the same sizes. Start with the first piece of cardboard – cutting it into whatever shape you want. Stack it on top of the construction paper to use as a template. Repeat with another piece of cardboard (to make a back for the book).
Punch two holes on the left side of each piece of cardboard and paper. Stack the book pieces together to make sure that all of the holes line up. One hole should be about 1-inch down from the top and the other should be 1-inch from the bottom.
Thread two pieces of yarn though the holes – one in each. Tie the yarn to bind the book.
Draw a cover and pages. Pick a story, theme or topic to feature. This can be a re-telling of a classic such as Little Red Riding Hood, a completely new fictional tale, a favorite interest (such as art or sports) or a non-fiction narrative.
Read and re-read the book!
