One of the only things that banks are good for, is giving us Bank Holidays. A cheeky Monday or Friday off work allows us to extend the weekend and maybe do something a little extra special.

Unfortunately, holiday companies have a habit of hiking up prices around these times. So our advice to you is to get booking early. Take a look at these ideas for short weekend breaks in the UK, and make the most out of this year’s bank holidays.

Find some peace and quiet in a remote cottage in the Lake District

Cottages are great, especially if there’s a few of you to share the price. It’s often like a home away from home, except instead of brick walls and pollution; you’ve got the stunning views and fresh air greeting you every morning. Great if you have dogs, as the walks would be spectacular. By day you could go walking or hiking if you’d prefer, and take in the picturesque views of the lakes and mountains, then stroll back to your cosy cottage where work and stress will seem a million miles away.

The Lake District is very popular with hikers and climbers. Located in northwest England in the county of Cumbria, it’s the second largest National Park in the UK.

Get some action packed fun at theme park Alton towers

For those who prefer to blow away the cob webs by seeking thrills and adrenaline rushes. Why not book an action packed weekend in Staffordshire. Staffordshire is the location of Alton towers – the UK’s biggest and best theme park. You can ride all the coasters at least once, and if you stay a second day, why not try the Water Park? There’s even a spa and extraordinary golf to try.

If you have kids, then as an extra treat you could stay at one of the Alton Towers hotels for a truly unique experience. It’ll save you arranging transport to and from the resort, and inject some more fun into your stay. You’ll also receive early ride tickets as part of your stay. There’s a few options for accommodation, too: You can stay in a luxury tree house in the enchanted village; one of many themed rooms full of hidden surprises; Splash Landings, a Caribbean themed hotel; or one of their woodland lodges.

This break is ideal for the Easter bank holiday, but book early as they tend to up their prices the closer it gets. There’s also 30% off if you book before the end of January.

Award yourself a little bit of luxury with a spa break in Somerset

If you work hard all year, you need to treat yourself from time-to-time. A weekend spa break might just be the thing to bring you back to life, and chase away the stress monsters hiding in your head. Give yourself a full service and M.O.T at one of Somerset’s luxury spa hotels.

Spa hotels are dotted around the whole of the UK, but Somerset has some great ones. Somerset is also a great location for panoramic views, good food and drink, ancient sites, sleepy old towns, fine walking and tempting beaches.

Be thoroughly entertained at one of many Haven holiday parks

Winner of the 2014 British Travel Awards, Haven Holidays is a popular choice for those with children. With parks in over 30 locations, it’s hard to choose a favourite.  Haven holidays specialises in camping or caravan breaks, and are usually located along the coast of the UK. They’re known to provide heaps of fun for all the family, with a variety of activities and facilities to use, such as indoor heated swimming pools and outdoor pools, kids clubs, sports and evening entertainment.

A break like this allows you to relax, while also giving your children access to unlimited fun, without wearing you out. Book before January 31st to receive 25% off short breaks.

Head to the beach and catch those waves in Cornwall

This is one for the Summer, as Cornwall boasts some of the best beaches in the UK. The dramatic coastlines and idyllic villages also add to the charm of this beautiful destination.

Try a Cornish pasty while conversing with the locals, or go on a coastal walk and marvel at the cornish castles. One thing you can’t leave Cornwall without doing, is trying your hand at surfing the huge waves Newquay is famous for, and staying until the sun sets.

Become one with nature and go camping in Wales

Outdoorsy types might be interested in pitching their tent and exploring what Wales has to offer. There’s a tonne of locations that are perfect for camping, and some of them even allow you to go ‘Glamping’, a new craze among those who’re a little unsure about the great outdoors.

Why not get back-to-basics and experience sleeping under the stars. Best done in a group, where the conversation is flowing as much the food and drink.

Try something cultural and go to Edinburgh

If you need a bit of culture in your life then head to Edinburgh. Take advantage of the fact that we can still do this without our passports, and discover why we simply need this capital city to stay within the United Kingdom.

Edinburgh has some of the most stunning scenery, striking architecture, fine food, and beautiful coast and countryside you will ever see. Educate yourself and learn about the country’s culture, history and heritage. You’ll be glad you did.
