CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND

is Here!

Building on the fun of last season’s format change, the MHL will once again have our house league teams participating in Championship Weekend.  All teams who have finished in the top four of their Round Robins will complete on Friday, April 1 evening or Saturday, April 2nd in the semi-finals.  Gold, silver and bronze games will take place on Sunday, April 3 to cap off another season. Games will be played primarily at Iceland and Hershey arenas, with Meadowvale Arena being added for some Sunday games. Good luck to all our teams as they compete for medals!

Good luck to all our teams as they compete this weekend.  Have fun, play hard, and remember … it’s just a game.

MHL Golf Tournament Benefits MHL Play-More!

The 14th Annual MHL Charity Golf Tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, May 10th, 2016 at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Georgetown, Ontario (a ClubLink course). The tournament is a shotgun start, scheduled to begin at 1:00pm, followed by a buffet dinner and prizes in the clubhouse. The tournament registration of $150.00 per golfer includes your round of golf, with power cart, buffet dinner, and a chance to win some great prizes. As in the past, all proceeds of the tournament will go towards the MHL Play-More Program, which helps reduce the cost of playing hockey for those children whose families are facing financial hardship. Support from these types of events means that the MHL will continue to be able to give youth a chance at hockey, life lessons and memories. There will be limited space for golfers and spots fill up quickly, so please register as soon as possible. To do so, please visit our website and either register on-line, or download the PDF form and send it our way. The MHL is also providing opportunities for hole sponsorship and prize donations. If you are interested in helping us out in this regard, we would greatly appreciate it.

To register or for any questions, please contact the MHL Office at 905-607-1118 or By Email

Ref’s Corner

There some particular penalities that address safety of our goaltenders.  Here’s a summary of what our referees are watching for in order to protect goalies.

Goaltender Interference:

The objective is to protect the Goaltender from injury and to prevent violence & retaliatory fouls.

A penalty shall be assessed when the goaltender is intentionally bumped or deliberately prevented from moving.

Hockey plays that go result in illegal contact are to be penalized. A Major + GM will be assessed when illegal contact that meets “significant” contact criteria occurs. Remember, hockey is a fast game and officials must make a decision on what he/she sees from a different perspective than anyone else in the arena.

Rules of Interest:

Puck out of sight

Officials are instructed to stop play once they lose sight of the puck.  In goal mouth scrambles, officials are encouraged to get into a position where they can try to see the puck.  It is mandatory for the Referee to stop play once he/she has lost sight of the puck.  The intent to blow the whistle is key in this situation, as it takes a couple of seconds for this action to occur.  Depending on where the front official is positioned on the ice, he/she might not be able to see the puck if it is loose on the other side of the goalie.

Five Goal Spread rule 3rd period

If there is a five or more goal spread at the start of the third period or anytime during the 3rd period, that period will be a “running time” period unless the goal spread comes within three.  The remainder of the period will be stop time until a team scores to gain a five-goal advantage at any time during the third period, then the remainder of the period will be “running time”.
