Lindsey Stirling is one of the most successful and diverse musicians within electronic music today. She is a platinum-selling artist, her self-titled debut album entered at number one on the Billboard Electronic/Dance chart, and also at number 23 in the Billboard Classical chart, and she currently has over half a billion views on YouTube collectively with her array of music videos.

On top of this, she also has sold out her past two tours worldwide, and is now fully underway in the midst of touring once again in this later part of 2014, in support of her sophomore album ‘Shatter Me‘. She has also managed to land her a truly astonishing support slot for a very well established musician; we will get to this shortly!

Lindsey was kind enough to chat to us in the midst of her busy schedule in Berlin to tell us more!

HTF : Hello there Lindsey, and thanks for chatting with us! Firstly, how are you doing on this fine autumnal day?

LS : I’m awesome! The fall colours are absolutely beautiful over here in Berlin right now.

HTF : Your latest album ’Shatter Me’ is introducing classical music to a market that would not necessarily be attributed to that genre of music. What are your thoughts on the importance of classical music, and what benefits can a mainstream audience (particularly in electronic music) learn from this?

LS : Just like ballet is the best foundation for any style of dancer, I think classical music is the best foundation for any musical style. If you can play classical music, you can play anything. I think the best EDM producers are the ones with classical backgrounds. My favourite producers to work with are those who are classically trained.

HTF : Who are some of your favourite composers and favourite compositions?

LS : One of my favourite composers is definitely Tchaikovsky. But some of my favourite compositions are most definitely ‘Prince Igor’ by Andrew Borodin, and ‘Danse Macabre’ by Camille Saint-Saëns.

HTF : Aside from classical music for a moment, what are some of your other favourite artists / genres of music?

LS : I truly love so many types of music! In terms of electronic music… Daft Punk, Skrillex, Nero, and Zedd are up there.

I also love a good bit of 90s pop – particularly Britney Spears and N*Sync! But other artists I do particularly love are the likes of Katy Perry, and of course Paramore.

HTF : What are your current thoughts on the electronic music scene, specifically the very polarizing ‘EDM’ movement?

LS : I think the EDM movements are often super short-lived so it’s impossible to stay on top of your game if you’re chasing the latest trend.

HTF : You’re on quite an extensive tour at the moment. How is it going so far?

LS : Amazing, although we have definitely had some bumps! Our truck with all our gear in it flipped but miraculously everyone was OK, and none of our gear was damaged. I’ve also had some costumes fall apart as well! But the shows have been awesome, the fans are amazing, and my tour crew are my favourite people in the world.

HTF : We also have seen that you will be supporting Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli on his UK/Euro tour in November. That must be such an honour to be opening up for him?

LS : I will be playing several songs with him in his shows, and I am so incredibly honoured and nervous. But I am super excited though!

HTF : What does the live performance mean to you personally, and creatively? Has combining the worlds of classical and electronic been somewhat of a challenge in the live atmosphere?

LS : On the contrary, electronic music has so much energy in a live setting! That’s one of the reasons that I wanted to get into this type of music. I wanted to have fun while performing, I wanted the music to inspire movement, and I wanted to make people have fun rather than trying to impress. I love performing because I get to see people smile as I play music. Music that I created, and that to me is magical.

HTF : What are some of your other interests in life that you draw inspiration from creatively and artistically?

LS : I love music videos, Pinterest and Google. I have idea folders that I put images in that I find online and it is a pool from which I draw inspiration.

HTF : It is also noted that you have worked with the Atlanta Music Project back in 2013, and also this year you have been working with Cirque Du Soleil for One Night For One Drop in Las Vegas. Have you been working with any other charitable organisations, or have any other forms of alternative work lined up in the near future like this?

LS : I would like to do more to keep the music programs alive in the US. I do motivational speaking for teenagers and I hope to do more of that in the future.

HTF : And finally to wrap things up here, what can we expect from you in 2015?

LS : I’ll be touring some more for sure. I want to work with composers to score a film, and I want to try doing a little bit of acting. Here is to 2015!
