Charlie Countryman (previously named The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman) is a genre defying film starring Shia LaBeouf as Charlie, a man on a mission who has choosen to follow a vision he had and set out for Bucharest. However an unusual occurrence on the plane derails the plans he has and he finds himself falling in love with a beautiful musician called Gabi (Evan Rachel Wood). This relationship leads to a series of unexpected events in Charlies life, as he finds himself drawn into a sinister Romanian underworld in an attempt to free Gabi from a malevolent gangster named Nigel, who is played fittingly by Mads Mikkelsen- who showed a great depth to his acting recently in his portrayal of the guileful Hannibal Lecter in the TV series adaptation of Hannibal.
John Hurt narrates the narrative and Rupert Grint even features as a drugged up character, his most interesting departure from his usual acting since the classic (and underrated) film, Cherry Bomb. Even more surprising than Rupert’s appearance is James Buckley (Jay from Inbetweeners) featuring in the film. The film has met some mixed reviews in the us but looks like it’s definitely worth a watch, even just to see how James handles a non comedic role. A UK release date is still to be confirmed.
