Moderator: Steven Hoffman, Cofounder of Founders Space
Dong-Su Kim, Ph.D. is a Director of Investment at Samsung Ventures America. He covers semiconductors, displays, renewable energy and "emerging" businesses, which includes healthcare and biotech. He has over thirteen years of investment, strategy, planning, and technology experience. Prior to joining Samsung Ventures, he was a director of Asia Evolution, an investment bank in Korea covering mid-market financing, private placement, and M&As. Before joining Asia Evolution he was a Senior Manager at Technology Strategy Office in Samsung Electronics. As the CTO's staff, he was responsible for strategic venture investments and technology alliance. He also worked in technology planning for Samsung's Telecom R&D center, responsible for discovering new research topics. Prior to that, he was a Technical Leader at Samsung Fiber Optics Business in charge of development of fiber optic components and also managed a technical sales team. Dong-Su has a M.A. and a Ph.D. from Princeton University in Electrical Engineering, and a B.S. with honors from the California Institute of Technology in Applied Physics.
Bob Ackerman is the Managing Director & Founder, Allegis Capital. He currently sits on the Boards of Apprion, DriverSide, Purewave and Shape Security. Prior investments include LGC Wireless, IronPort Systems (CSCO), iBeam Broadcasting (NASDAQ), Comparnet (MSFT), StepUp Commerce (INTU) and Classroom Connect (ENL). Mr. Ackerman uses his more than fifteen years of general management, venture capital and strategic mergers and acquisition advisory experience to support the firm's technology start-up companies. Prior to Allegis Capital, his operating experience includes, CEO of UniSoft Systems (a world leading UNIX systems house operating in the U.S., Europe and Asia) and a founder and Chairman of InfoGear Technology Corporation (the first internet appliance company; acquired by CISCO in 2000). Mr. Ackerman was a member of the 2007 Forbes MIDAS list of the world's leading venture and technology leaders. He has been a keynote speaker at the Investors Business Forum (IBF) on Corporate Venturing & Strategic Investing and has spoken numerous times at the Red Herring and Montgomery Investment Banking Conferences. Mr. Ackerman was also a member of the Board of Directors of The Entrepreneur's Foundation, a non-profit organization in Silicon Valley that develops and facilitates community support programs within the high-technology community. He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the San Francisco-based Asian Art Museum. Mr. Ackerman has a BS degree in Computer Science.
Steve Hoffman is a high tech serial entrepreneur and cofounder of Founders Space. Hoffman is a founding member of the Academy of Television’s Interactive Media Group, was Chairman for the Producers Guild SF, and served on the Board of Governors for the New Media Council. Hoffman is also a cofounder of LavaMind LLC, which develops and publishes entertainment and educational apps and sites, including ReadSmartly, Gazillionaire, Zapitalism, Profitania, Beetle Bounce, Spell Gems and Jackpot Words. Prior to this, Hoffman was the Chief Product Officer at Playkast, an online video startup that merged with FunStar (backed by Accel Ventures & Qualcomm). Hoffman was COO of Zannel (Tap11), a ventured-funded startup backed by USVP, Alloy, and Palomar Ventures that was sold to AVOS (YouTube cofounders). Before that, Hoffman was the North American Studio Head for Infospace, where he ran the US mobile games publishing and development group. While in Los Angeles, Hoffman was CEO of Spiderdance, Hollywood's leading interactive television studio, whose customers included NBC, Viacom, Time Warner, TBS, GSN and A&E. Hoffman also consulted for R/GA Interactive, designing projects for Kodak, Disney, Intel, AdAge, and Children's Television Workshop. In Japan, Hoffman worked as a designer for Sega. Prior to Sega, he was a Hollywood development executive at Fries Entertainment, where he managed TV development. Hoffman graduated from the University of California with a BS in Electrical Computer Engineering and went on to earn a Masters in Film & Television from the University of Southern California.
