Hello everyone and welcome to the 54th edition of our Travel Photography Competition where this week we are showing the very best photos sent into our  Facebook page between 28th July and 3rd August.

Life has been hectic in the world of Hitch-HikersHandbook as we have recently finished our 2 month hitch-hiking trip across northern Italy and the Balkan Peninsula and we are back in Barcelona ready for the new academic year.  So let’s all take a few moments to forget about our stresses and be transported by our wonderful contributors’ photos to distant lands.

The first winner this week was taken on the magical island province of Siquijor in the Philippines. The island, famed for its numerous beaches, was called Island of Fire by the Spanish due to the uncountable fireflies that gave it a mysterious glow.

This stunning shot was sent in by Michael Westermann and his Sketches of Asia Facebook page. For more of his fabulous shots of South East Asia check out his WordPress blog Sketches of Asia. Cheers Michael!

Our last winner this week depicts Skógafoss waterfall in Iceland.

‘Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country with a width of 25 metres (82 feet) and a drop of 60 m (200 ft).

According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. The legend continues that locals found the chest years later, but were only able to grasp the ring on the side of the chest before it disappeared again. The ring was allegedly given to the local church. The old church door ring is now in a museum, though whether it gives any credence to the folklore is debatable.’
