The Royal Mint has struck the only official UK coins to mark the Queen's Sapphire Jubilee. This brilliant uncirculated £5 coin is presented with a booklet written in collaboration with Royal Correspondent Jennie Bond, who reflects on the characteristics that make Queen Elizabeth II such a popular British monarch.
The Sapphire Jubilee marks the 65th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne in 1952, the first British monarch to reach this historic milestone, having become Britain's longest reigning monarch in 2015 and celebrated her 90th birthday in 2016.
Glyn Davies joined The Royal Mint’s team of coin designers in 2012 and has also designed the 2015 Remembrance poppy coin.
“I drew inspiration from the regalia associated with The Queen’s coronation. As opposed to many traditional designs, I’ve rotated the crown to make a feature of the Stuart sapphire. I have also included a quotation from Her Majesty’s 21st birthday speech, which makes the design more personal. I used computer-aided design to create the inscription, but sculpted elements of the crown in clay. Combining a modern approach with traditional craftsmanship gives the design an energetic rather than static feel.” Glyn Davies, Royal Mint
The Royal Mint Sapphire Jubilee 2017 coin collection also includes Royal Mint Sapphire Jubilee 2017 silver proof £5 coin.
