Erica’s Montmartre view
SoPi has exploded and Montmartre has gentrified. Real estate values are up. Abbesses now evokes hip, funky and stylish. Parisians come here for a weekend outing, no longer shunning it for the potential dangers of hoodlums and prostitutes.

I wince at the increasing number of chain stores, the Starbucks that popped up around the corner, and the Subway sandwich shops exploding everywhere like mushrooms… Quelle horreur!
Rose Bakery & Montmartre Streets
People live here, eat here, shop here, and call it home. Despite many changes, Rue Lepic and Rue des Abbesses remain lively market streets, and the chimes of the St Jean de Montmartre church continue to ring cheerfully throughout the day, according to an elusive schedule that I have never been able to determine, for services and special occasions.
From the incredible light and the wake up call of singing birds, to the quiet early morning streets, I feel at home and at peace in my neighborhood adoré.

I happily accept the now-amazing bread, the flourishing organic food scene, the great coffee, and the growing choice of interesting new shops and tasty restaurants.
Voila my current list of favorite shops, cafes and restaurants within a short radius of my home in Montmatre. The list is not extensive or all-inclusive. You will find many other wonderful spots in the area. Enjoy!

Organic food: Le Carillon de L’Olivier – Small, friendly and stocked full of excellent organic foods, I prefer this tiny shop to the larger organic chain supermarkets in the area.

Fruits and Vegetables: Au Verger des Abbesses – My friends at the Verger always have a smile, a friendly word and often a delicious gift. Prices are not inexpensive, and bio is not much of a preoccupation, but quality and variety abound.

Tea: Neo T – Welcoming and privately owned. No chain store here. This tiny shop offers variety and personally sourced teas. The owner regularly travels to China, Japan, India and anywhere of tea interest. Samples offered. Organic available.

Lunch: Rose Bakery – Across the boulevard and down the hill, Rose Bakery remains my go to spot for freshly prepared organic deliciousness. From the salads, quiche and risotto to the juices, tea, cakes and desserts everything is creative, tasty and wonderful.

Lunch and dinner: Le Pantruche – Delicious, creative and friendly this bustling neighborhood gem is a Paris foodie destination. Reservations are a must.

Coffee: Kooka Boora – A neighborhood staple for the anglo hipster coffee loving scene. Kooka Boora is the perfect meeting spot for excellent coffee and tasty treats. In warmer weather the outside tables are the ideal spot for people watching and sun.

Coquelicot
Beer: People’s Drugstore – The large selection of international and local beers from a friendly knowledgeable staff is a must for beer connoisseurs and aficionados.

Bread: Coquelicot – When I moved to Paris over 20 years ago, it was harder to find a decent baguette. I was young and inexperienced and did not know my way around the bread scene. It was only when amazing boulangeries started popping up that I realized what I had been missing. Coquelicot is a personal favorite. Their many varieties of bread and baguettes are all excellent. The Sunday morning line is long … and worth the wait.

La Butte Fromagerie
Cheese: La Butte Fromagerie – Friendly service and a nice selection of goat cheese, fresh butter, eggs, yoghurt and crème fraiche.

Flowers: Des Fleurs pour Soi – An excellent selection of quality flowers and plants. Watch out for the cute but grumpy doggy in the back. I often pop in here after a coffee at Kooka Boora.
