Bass spawning season is upon us and undoubtedly, February is the best month for anglers to hit the waters in search of trophy bass. If you’ve ever tinkered with the concept of bringing the family along for a fishing excursion, the Highland Lakes offers you an ideal time to do just that. Pleas of, “I’m bored, I wanna go home!” aren’t likely to be an issue especially if you employ an experienced fishing guide and take advantage of all the great camping options or lakeside accommodations in the area. Let’s not forget to mention that fishing is license-free within all Texas State Parks!

Bass Fishing for a Family Getaway on Lake Buchanan

Big Buc offers superior fishing year round, but it’s primarily noted for having sizable crappie, largemouth, white and striped bass populations from February through early May. The best fishing is along the Beaver Creek area and the mouth of the Colorado River at the north side of Lake Buchanan, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife service keeps the bass well stocked throughout the reservoir.

Bring the whole gang and even your pets along and make it a weekend or an entire week – your group will never tire of the amazing views and the surplus of amenities at the lakeside Thunderbird Resort in Burnet. Cabins, cottages, and mobile home rentals are fully appointed, and a large lodge is designed to accommodate groups up to 20 under one roof. The onsite marina offers fishing guide services, motorboats, kayaks, canoes and all the gear you need to spend a day on the water reeling them in or just relaxing. Don’t feel bad if the family stays behind and enjoys fishing off the dock or taking advantage of the resort’s pool and cabana, tennis and basketball courts, playground, and other fun activities.

Lake LBJ Bass Fishing and Host Site of Upcoming Student Tournament

Just outside of the community of Marble Falls, Lake LBJ is a favorite of anglers simply because the white bass runs that occur up the Llano River is unbeatable and irresistibly fun! This constant-level lake boasts trophy-sized largemouth bass that draws in anglers from across the state and beyond, and this reservoir is also noted for having the best white crappie fishing, with good levels of blue channel and flathead catfish, too. Lake LBJ is a top choice for tournaments, and here’s an upcoming event that’s great for families looking to get their kid’s interested in this recreational activity.

The Bass Federation will host the 2014 Student Angler Federation Texas High School Fishing State Championship on Saturday, March 15 at Lake LBJ at the lovely LBJ Yacht Club and Marina. Area students can sign up at the Angler Celebration on Friday, March 14th within the Lakeside Pavilion in Marble Falls, at 6pm where the rules are explained followed by a tasty dinner.

More Highland Lakes Fishing

We’re out of room, but simply cannot leave out our other great fishing lakes here in the Highland Lakes chain. Inks Lake State Park is the smallest of the lakes, but certainly is the prettiest and most popular for families and fishing. Lake Travis outside of Austin offers good bass fishing, but Lake Marble Falls is best for anglers seeking sunfish and catfish species. Bring as much or as little along as you like and come out and catch your fill in the Texas Hill Country – we’ve got everything you need here to have a successful fishing trip with the family.
