While I truly believe the holidays can be the most wonderful time of the year I also realize they are the busiest time of the year.   With holiday baking, parties to go to, and shopping to do, I don’t usually have much energy left for making an elaborate dinner when I get home.  During November and December I often look for ways to have a complete meal without the fuss so that I have time for more important things.

That’s where Walmart Deli comes in.   There’s a Walmart just a few minutes from my work and this past Friday I stopped in after work because I had had a long week at school.   I ran to the deli and found a ton of prepared meal ideas at reasonable prices.   My husband and I love pizza and I was able to get a large pepperoni pizza that was piping hot and ready to eat.   I grabbed a container of potato salad and a container of cole slaw and my meal was complete.   I also bought a few 2 liters of Coke Zero to enjoy with our meal.   I put everything in the cart, checked out, and was home in 10 minutes with dinner ready to be served.

When I walked in the house my husband was thrilled that I had brought home pizza.  He had been working out in the yard all day and was tired and hungry as well.  I put down a few paper plates and we enjoyed our prepared meal from Walmart along with the Coke Zero.  When we were finished my husband put everything in the garbage and announced that the dishes were done!   We both went out to the living room and it was really nice being able to chill and talk about our day during the time we normally spend preparing a meal or doing the dishes.   Sometimes a prepared meal makes the holiday a little happier.

Not only did this meal make the holiday a little brighter for us, but it’s also making the holidays a little happier for others.   This year Coca-Cola and Walmart have teamed up with The Salvation Army. For every Walmart Deli prepared meal purchased along with Coca-Cola in November and December,  Coca-Cola at Walmart will provide a meal to families in need through The Salvation Army, so those families will be able to enjoy the holidays together over a warm meal.  How cool is that?

The Salvation Army has always had a soft spot in my heart because of my dad.   When he was young and in the army, he talks about how The Salvation Army really helped him out.  He didn’t have a lot back then and was grateful for what they could give him.  That’s why I always give to The Salvation Army whenever I can.   I love that I can purchase a prepared meal from the Walmart Deli along with a Coca-Cola product, enjoy the meal with my husband, and know that we are helping a family in need.   It’s a win-win for everyone!

You can also help families in need this holiday season.   Simply share a picture of your own family enjoying Coca-Cola and a prepared meal from Walmart Deli using the hashtag #GiveHappiness, and help spread awareness about this program and inspire others to help families in need.

Speaking of giving happiness this holiday season, I couldn’t just let my Coke Zero bottle go in the garbage can at the end of our meal.   While we were eating I had a great idea to turn it into something that I could share with others this holiday.   I made the Coke Zero bottle into a fun Santa Claus cookie jar!   Isn’t that awesome?   I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out but I had some paint and some cotton balls in the house and I just went for it.   I painted, I glued, and I waited and a fabulous cookie jar was my end product.  It only took me about 15 minutes to make and I plan on filling it with homemade cookies and sharing it with a friend!  It’s something that I made myself, will hold a homemade gift, and is something that can be reused.

Make your own Santa Claus cookie jar with a 2 liter Coke bottle, some paint, and cotton balls!

Author: Heather Lynne

Recipe type: Craft

Serves: 1 cookie jar

Ingredients

1 (2 liter) plastic bottle of Coke

scissors or a pen knife

red paint

white paint

black paint

50 cotton balls

Mod Podge

paintbrushes

Instructions

Pull the wrapper off of the plastic bottle and then wash and dry the bottle.

Using the knife or scissors, puncture a hole about ¼ of the way down the bottom. Cut around in a circle to make the top of the cookie jar. I used the pen knife to poke a few holes then cut with the scissors.

Using a paint brush, paint the entire top part of the bottle red. Set aside.

Using a paint brush, paint the front and sides of the bottom part of the bottle white. Set aside.

Take 5 cotton balls and pull them apart until they are triple the size of a regular cotton ball.

Using the Mod Podge and a paintbrush, paint the bottom part of the "hat". Quickly place the pulled apart cotton balls on the hat, forming the white part of the hat. Set aside to dry.

Use the Mod Podge and the same paintbrush to paint down one side of the white paint. Press on cotton balls. Repeat with the other side of the white paint. Put one more column of cotton balls on each side.

Using the black paint, make 2 black eyes in the middle of the white paint.

Using the red paint, make a red nose.

Take 1 cotton ball and pull it apart until it is thin. Using the Mod Podge, glue this underneath the red nose for Santa's mustache.

Using the red paint, make a red mouth.

Take the Mod Podge and paint underneath the red mouth and glue on the cotton balls for the rest of Santa's beard.

Place a bit of Mod Podge on top of the cap and top with a cotton ball for the top of Santa's hat.

Allow to dry for 30 minutes.

Place the hat on Santa's head and use as a cookie jar!
