I don’t have a beard, obviously. But as I didn’t want to withhold you this cool new vegan beauty product, I made Jesse (my
hairy
cute boyfriend) test the Brooklyn Soap Company beard kit! First time ever he wrote a blogpost on heylilahey. I hope you enjoy his honest and super authentic review as much as I do!

One of the advantages of being the boyfriend of a blogger is that sometimes I get to test things out for free. This is one of those opportunities. Mia was sent the “Beard Bag” kit from Brooklyn Soap Company and seeing as she does not have a beard, I was tasked with testing it. With the “beard revival” of late that has been inspired by the propagation of the hipster products such as this have been popping up and have become very popular.

I usually don’t have a full beard, more like facial hair of varying length depending on how lazy I have been with regards to shaving. But for this assignment I decided that I would grow a real beard and bring out the trendy, hipster that has been lurking inside me (not really). As I am in the process of finishing up my PhD, I also decided at this time that I would not shave my beard until I have finished my thesis so it has gotten rather long in the last month or so.

Further playing to the hipster trend, the company promises to “turn regular dudes into dapper gentlemen”. So let’s see if they can live up to this promise because I am far from dapper. On to the test!

The kit is basically everything you need to care for a beard and comes with a 250ml bottle of Beardwash, a 30ml bottle of Beard Oil with pipette and a comb. The design of the bottle is appealing: a retro design that makes me think of old industrial era signs, but it has also become super trendy so it is not really super original. The Beardwash is a clear liquid cleanser specifically designed for the hair structure of a beard. The Beard Oil is made out of organic sesame oil and is designed to nourish the facial hair and skin.

Both of these products do what they promise. The Beardwash is much better for cleaning a beard and feels much better on the skin under the beard than traditional shampoo. When applied it lathers a lot and I mean a lot and it feels great. The natural peppermint and rosemary also have a cooling and moisturizing effect on the skin. I was a bit skeptical due to the fragrance at first, but I grew to love the peppermint and rosemary smell. I usually don’t wear any cologne and can’t even walk into a perfume store (I wait outside when Mia goes into places such as Sephora). So as I said, I was a bit skeptical. But after using it I was pleasantly surprised. It has a pretty strong fragrance when first applied but this fades and becomes a nice subtle remnant after washing it out. The smell is rather refreshing and is great for year round use. Additionally, I learned that the strong fragrance is actually pretty good for a beard because they can get a bit smelly as the day goes on.

Since the Bear Oil and Beardwash are sold together as I kit, I assumed that they were supposed to complement each other. But as far as the smell goes, the two products go in different directions. Where the Beardwash was a refreshing pepperminty smell, the Beard Oil was more of a musky, dark, woodsy smell. It is a pleasant smell, but pales in comparison to the smell of the Beardwash. Additionally, I don’t like musky smells for myself in general and especially for my beard. As the day goes on I generate my own musky smell and don’t need more muskiness to add to it (maybe this is just me, or maybe I’m just a smelly guy). But that is why I would prefer a crisper, fresher smell similar to that of the Beardwash. The Beard Oil is applied using a pipette and then coming the oil through the beard. Application was easy and I definitely think it nourished the skin under the beard. I tend to have dry skin under my beard and on my scalp and regularly use oil to help keep my skin moisturized. This oil seemed to do a good job because I no longer had dry or flaky skin under my beard.

Conclusion

Beardwash: ★★★★★

Beardoil: ★★

After a few days of using the products my beard already felt much softer and also looked significantly healthier. So I would highly recommend the kit! It does what it promises in cleansing the facial hair and caring for the skin beneath the beard. My only qualm is that the smell of the Beardwash outshines that of the Beard Oil. The product is a little pricey compared to other products at 40 Euros, but it is made from high quality, natural and vegan ingredients so I believe the price is justified.

The only thing that I really don’t like about the whole product is that they call themselves Brooklyn Soap Company. When I read that I assumed that they were a company based in Brooklyn, but after taking a look through their website I saw that they are a German company based in Hamburg. Being a born and raised New Yorker, it always bugs me a little when people try to steal a bit of the cities cool in order to sell things. Don’t front, be proud of yourself and where you are from. (edit Mia: apparently the founders where on a trip in New York and got inspired there)

In conclusion it is a great product for men who value a well-kept beard. Smells nice male, but not too intrusive and helps keep your beard nice and soft (which the lady in your life will most likely appreciate).
