Hesperian Health Guides is seeking a full-time publications designer to join our design / production team. The publications designer will be responsible for helping to produce our internationally renowned health materials as well as producing materials for our promotion and fundraising departments. Specifically this position is responsible for designing, maintaining and offering production support for a variety of formats such as: traditional books, PDF, brochures, ebooks, mobile aps, and variety of promotional pieces. An important aspect of this position is the maintenance and management of our Digital Asset Management system.

Current projects include new English language materials on health care, HIV and children, and their translations into Spanish and other languages; the updating of a wide variety of materials on various health issues; maintaining a growing collection of illustrations in our Digital Asset Management system; assisting with the UI, UX, and graphic design of mobile apps, e-books, web-based content and other new digital formats. We also produce project-related posters and flyers, and organizational promotional and fundraising materials.

Hesperian is the nonprofit publisher of Where There Is No Doctor and other resources for grassroots community-based health programs worldwide. We promote self-reliance and self-determination by providing communities with the basic information that they need to improve their health conditions. We collaborate internationally with health workers and local organizations to develop accessible materials primarily in English and Spanish, but also occasionally in other languages. Our books address environmental health, worker health and safety in export processing zones, HIV, women’s health, midwifery, child development, disabilities, health worker training, and dentistry.

Over the past 2 years, Hesperian has transformed itself into an organization at the cutting edge of providing international health information in electronic formats. The Hesperian Digital Commons features free lifesaving health information in 31 languages in PDF, and 13 in our HealthWiki; a searchable online library of more than 10,000 health education illustrations; and our first iPhone and Android app on Safe Pregnancy and Birth. These digital formats offer new design opportunities and challenges for keeping critical health information accessible and approachable.

Core responsibilities of this position:
• Work as a team member in the design and production of print books, ebooks, and online content
• Manage the Hesperian Images art database
• Help keep Hesperian’s health information accessible as the technology of information dissemination continues to develop

Essential qualifications:
• Graphic design and specifically book layout/ design experience in the CS6 versions of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat Pro.
• Excellent production skills with strong attention to detail and a commitment to high standards for the layout work you produce.
• Good understanding of print production processes and technical requirements.
• Understanding of the principles of good print design and the ability to apply them to digital health education materials.
• Patience and ability to work collaboratively with writers, editors, and the production team through multiple revisions, on multiple projects, and to sustain long book production phases
• Ability to work under deadline when necessary
• Commitment to our mission: producing high-quality, relevant health materials for people with varying levels of formal education in poor communities worldwide
• Well-developed file management and organizational skills

Highly preferred qualifications:
• Well-developed technical skills in creating digital output and troubleshooting
• Ability to read in Spanish and/or other languages
• Health or educational materials development experience
• Experience working with audio and video files
• Drawing ability (or at least ability to edit art)
• Book production experience
• UI/UX or other experience designing e-books, web, mobile apps
• Working knowledge of HTML and CSS

Desirable qualifications:
• Experience in the developing world
• Reading ability in as many languages as possible
• Writing, editing, and/or proofreading experience

Salary and Benefits:
The starting salary range for this position is $42–49,000, depending on experience. Full benefits. Hesperian offers excellent benefits, including medical, dental, vision coverage and a 403B retirement plan.
