Times are tough in the job-sphere.

The job market is changing each time we blink, and unfamiliar job openings are starting to crop up.

Companies are changing the way they communicate with their customers, hence new jobs such as Social Media Manager (And you’re like, whaaa is that?) has become an integral part of businesses.

But what skills should you pick up to remain employable before those too become irrelevant? How can working mothers upgrade their competence without burning out while ensuring that a desk and paycheck is secured every month?

In order to remain employable and relevant to secure your job for the next decade, consider these:

1 DON’T BE A GRANDMA WHEN IT COMES TO TECH

Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Pinterest, Google Docs, Snapchat, WordPress and lets not forget about Instagram. You know the names but do you know how to operate them?

You don’t need a certificate or attend a class to add Instagram credibility to your experience. A simple Google search can assist you on finding hundreds of articles offering advice on how to make full use of the social media.

If you need to learn how to do something specific, make Google and Youtube your first priority.

Pshhh these days,  Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint isn’t everything. You don’t want to be sitting in a meeting or interview and draw up a blank face when someone mentions a new digital tool.

Lynda.com provides training videos with subscription plans that can help you learn web, business, design, video and computing skills on the side.

2 MAKE FRIENDS AND NETWORK

Whether you’re the boss or an executive, networking never goes out of style.

You need to start thinking of your connections and professional network as possible customers, referral sources and valuable assets.

You can open up a LinkedIn account, as it’s your main link to your connections. We are not saying that you have to stay in touch  ala Keeping Up with the Kardashians with all your connections; a simple holiday greeting will just do for those who are not as close.
