She is passionate about tackling corruption and maladministration, and keeping the powerful in check – and this former Port Elizabeth woman happens to be one of the 14 people in line to replace Advocate Thuli Madonsela as South Africa’s public protector.

Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) executive director, and the director for democracy and governance, Adjunct Professor Narnia Bohler-Muller, 44, said she was overwhelmed and excited at possibly succeeding Madonsela, whose term ends in October.

While Madonsela’s were big shoes to fill, she was looking forward to the opportunity, Bohler-Muller said.

“I would certainly wish to continue with her legacy, but also bring my own unique qualities and skills to bear on the position.

“What I most certainly would continue is her effort to create more awareness around the [Office of the Public Protector] and its mandate, and make it more accessible to ordinary South Africans,” she said.

“High-profile cases . . . attract attention, but the [public protector] must protect everyone who is entitled to assistance as stated in the constitution and legislation.”

Bohler-Muller believes a woman is better suited to the public protector position due to women’s natural tenacity and caring.

“[Madonsela] cared for South Africa, and for that reason she stood her ground and protected the interests of the people. South African women have shown their mettle. We are strong, and we are even stronger when we care,” she said.
